He traveled up to WA to be with his family (far north of WA almost at the border).

How does he apply for unemployment benefits at this point, would he apply in Ca (I guess through a website), even though he's now in WA?

He doesn't need to pay rent, but doesn't have a ton of savings and could use money for food etc. The $1200 will probably cover that, but if this goes on for awhile, he should probably file for unemployment.

I have no clue about unemployment since I never filed for it myself, and I think rules are different right now anyway.

Anyone an expert on this stuff?

I believe he should be applying in CA, since that is where he was employed, but unemployment is one of those things that varies between states so he is likely going to have to do some research.

Yeah, I'm sure he'll be able to figure it out, he was just traveling up to WA so can't look it up himself so I figured I'd ask on here. I'll look it up myself later as well, and once he gets there I'm sure he can find it online.

Is he just taking time off from work to be with family or is he actually laid off from his job? Unemployment usually hinges on being out of work under certain specified conditions.

He worked as a contractor primarily and through temp agencies, but worked constantly. He had actually just moved to the bay area from NY about 2 months ago and was getting situated, but was working full time.

Supposedly contractors and temp workers etc, can file for unemployment now according to the extensions on it, but.....he isn't going to be in that state. I think, from what I have seen, you can apply for unemployment even if you leave the state you were working in though, so I think he needs to do that.

Perhaps he will be able to work up there as well, but it's a small town out in the middle of nowhere, so probably not the same kinda jobs he was doing before.

Since he won't have rent etc, he should be ok, but like I said, if this is a long term thing he should apply now.
