And I usually don't get up at 5am to be at the store at 6 to take advantage of them. I've done it once so far, just to show appreciation. I used to resent being a Junior Citizen, but there aren't really that many perks to being a Senior.

I remember Wolfy was saying this about his grocery store. I think it was Safeway. I wouldn't be surprised if all the Safeways were doing it... I don't knot about the stores around here, though...

It's less because of the stockpiling and more to give vulnerable people a chance to do their shopping with fewer people around.

I think a good bit of the seniors are doing the stockpiling/hoarding. When Ive gone into the grocery store shortly after some of the senior hours, the place looked ransacked.

its the same issue

more people are at the stores because some people are hoarding and it makes even people who arent desperate to get the things they need

True, but even if the stores weren't busier than usual it'd be nice to have less-busy times for vulnerable people.

Thanks, folks! You convinced me. My alarm is set. I'm going to the store at 6am just because I can. I can't afford to hoard, so I'll spend maybe $15 on soda crackers, canned chili, ramen, possibly a package of TP if there is any, bacon, and beans.

Since they are holding senior hours for me, it's rude not to acknowledge it, right?

They do not seem to be enforcing anything near me, if anything i'ts more busy/crowded during those times, and I know for a fact alot of those people are not elderly or immune compromised.

That being said there is still a decent selection of stuff if you go early in the day at least (I have yet to go after opening hours any day).

I've only gone to Safeway and Fred Meyers though (at least since like 2 weeks ago...when I went to Winco...which was craaaaaazy way before we got to this level....I can't imagine it now.

I don't know how they should enforce it, but it certainly is not working right now, Tuesday/thursdays at safeway at opening time are probably 50% more crowded then any other day. I'd be totally down if it was elderly or people with diabetes etc, and yeah you can't always tell by looking at someone (for instance I'm diabetic) but either a majority of Americans are immune compromised, or alot of people who are not, and are young, are going during the times anyway.

Interesting! I'm 73, look 50, but they know me. Otherwise, just social pressure, I guess.

And I was also picking up stuff for a 73-year-old neighbor, who is frail. Does that also make me frail elderly by proxy? The staff at the store know that, too, and ask how she's doing.

Well legally speaking it would be true but would be a dick move if somebody did it including the lawyer taking the case.

All they are doing with toilet paper is making fire (God forbid) spread faster. I have 36 rolls and that'll last me awhile because I am never home during the week anyway.

I've cut my grocery store trips down to once a week and I only buy the essentials. My mom taught me long ago to keep pantry staples on hand so that's what I have always done.

I keep dry goods (rice, beans, pasta, flour etc on hand always), I also keep oils, vinegar, peanut butter, mustard, honey, a few herbs and spices along with frozen items like spinach, broccoli florets, fruit, canned goods, pasta sauce, and base for soups.

I managed to find a bag of rice finally. Already had beans that I honestly have no idea how old they are.

Even before this we only went once a month or couple months.

With the hours spouse was working, and them being the only one with a car and can drive... Kinda the way it had to be.

Made Seniors Hour at the store this morning, 6 am, toilet paper aisle my neighbor's granddaughter bought a 12-pack at yesterday was empty again. Got some more ramen, scored a half-price 2# package of hamburger, the soda crackers I forgot last time, and an 88 frozen pot pie. Yippee! Checked out by my favorite manager, she's doing okay, she asked about my neighbor, who's doing okay but has an appointment for angiographic tomography Tuesday.

Speaking of appointments, screening at the Outpatient Dept at the hospital was just questions by a masked tech about cough last Tuesday, on Thursday temperature taken by a masked and face-shielded and gowned tech who wrote the temp on a visitor's badge, wonder what screening will be this Tuesday? Screening is good but as soon as I put on a mask, I get a tickle in my throat like I need to cough!

I'm still amazed we don't have enough fucking toilet paper.

ARE YOUR ASSES CLEAN ENOUGH YET?

On that note I'm disappointed in our stores for limiting toilet paper packs to 3 a person. That should be 1. No one should be walking out with 3 packs, but anyone who gets their hands on it does.

It's not being properly enforced, certainly not here, where it's been designated as for elderly and vulnerable adults. As if most disabled or chronically ill people are able to get up and out that early, between meds and caregiver visits? I'm sure not.

Last time I was out for a medical appointment that early I wound up puking and nearly fainting when I got to the hospital, just because my system couldn't deal. So I don't think shopping would be an improvement - even if I could risk leaving the house at all, since I'd likely die if I caught this crud. The furthest I've been in 3 weeks or more is out on the balcony.

What they should be doing is prioritising online grocery delivery for two groups: those of us who used it regularly before the virus because of impaired mobility or vulnerability, and those who are newly vulnerable or self-isolating and haven't anyone to go out for them. (My agency caregivers are already overworked & short-staffed, without adding more duties.)
