Honestly, I think he is a decent enough human being, if a bit sanctimonious about scoffing animals.

This quote is silly. Just because we're all going to die doesn't mean we're all gonna die the same way. I for one would like to be dying in a comfy mansion after a fruitful and successful life. And we're competitive by nature so people are going to race to have what others have which poses a problem when said resource is scarce.

The entire point of the quote is your displayed selfishness is this post. Try to think beyond yourself and how your decisions and actions affect more than yourself and then maybe you can get what he is pointing to.

That this thinking is an epidemic among humanity is why everyone ignores it. Its easier to only think of yourself.

Feel free to spoonfeed me then. As far as I can tell, his quote is fighting against human nature to want to accumulate resources to match what others have.

Now if he said there's strength in numbers, or some other deep and profound way of saying it's beneficial to work together, then we're cooking with fire. That's how wealth is generated and populations thrive. Groups build wealth, not persons. But populations compete with one another, hence why I don't at all agree with that original quote.
