The only are for the sick. To keep their droplets from their breath and such from spreading the virus. They do barely anything from keeping you from getting it.

why wouldn't it keep a healthy person from getting sick? like a dust mask that keeps out dust and shit could also be effective for keeping out the virus

A mask is used to keep YOUR droplets from spreading. That's why surgical teams wear them, not to keep from breathing your guts, but to keep from contamination to the person.

You ever get sore eyes or an ear ache before getting sick? That's because the contagion entered your body there. The ONLY way to protect your self from a pathogen is FULL head gear. So if you want to be safe, get a hazmat hood.

I mean I worked in a PCU for five years so I know a few things about PPE

The idea that droplet precaution masks are only for patients is a very stupid thing to insist

Yeah, I mean healthcare professionals have stated it hundreds of times on the news and other media outsources. But let's trust a troll on gamefaqs.

So lets break down your thought process here

in your mind healthcare workers wear masks/PAPRs around patients with contact precautions so that the patient doesnt get even more sick? It has nothing to do with the sick person being clinically contagious?

Also good luck keeping a molded mask firmly against your face while youre heavily coughing or sneezing

More importantly, it keeps a barrier between your hands and your nose and mouth. A good reminder to not touch your face.

Also, I feel cool wearing mine

Yep it prevents people from getting sick that is why you see people in nearly full Hazmat suits whenever they are around known Covid-19 patients. If the mask was a fucking magical mask that prevented Covid-19 I think the government would be putting out PSA's telling everyone to wear one 24/7.

Not that much. Since normal people don't really know how to properly use PPE.

I see people taking off their masks to eat then putting it back on. Touching food with gloves. Taking gloves off then putting the same pair back on. Its wild.

Masks help a bit, but they're only good for an hour or two before the moisture from your breath makes them too damp to do much, and they do nothing to prevent infection through the eyes (which is a much more significant infection route than many people realize). You also completely negate the benefit they provide if you take them off at any time while in a potentially unsafe area (such as to eat or pick your nose), if they don't fit properly, if you have a beard, if you handle them with contaminated gloves, or if you don't immediately wash your hands after removing them, among other examples of misuse. Most people don't use them properly enough to make a significant difference.

N95 doesnt do anything at all. You need to be on air if you want zero chance of breathing any sickness.

Ok let me put it this way a mask will not help great grandma ethel avoid the convid19 virus unless she is huffing the direct sneezes of infected people. This is not a miasma. This virus works by physical contact with infected fluids. So yes the aerosol of an infected person will get you sick however its the already least likely cause of infection. What gets a person sick is when an infected individual puts infected fluids on a surface and then an uninfected person rubs a mucous membrane or inflamed tissue. The result is the virus is allowed into the body.

Unfortunately for most people you cannot got 30 mins withut touching your face which means that rubber gloves and face mask give a false sense of security and honestly they are more likely to get sick. People currently have the same logic as a guy who thinks you can use a condom again if you turn it inside out

If were talking about a basic surgical mask: are they perfect? No. Can they be penetrated by airborne microorganisms? Apparently yes.
But with that said, the claims that they are worthless are ridiculous. They do indeed help prevent you from inhaling airborne droplets.
When the dust finally settles on all this, and we are back to normal, everyone should buy some N95 masks (not all at once, people). We should have them to wear if this ever happens again. We have to stop with the stigma that we have around wearing masks. Wearing masks was one of the things that worked well in South Korea.

I dont think its so much a stigma against mask @BeerOnTap its that 2 or 3 people in any given city bought 20 cases a piece and have no knowledg3 of their usage and now people with immunodeficiency diseases or post transplant patients can no longer get them

Yeah this is exactly correct. Which is why I think when this is all over, and masks become less scarce again, people should be encouraged to have them on hand, in their homes, for the next time this happens.

As for the stigma thing, I would definitely say that in America people would give funny looks at people who wore face masks in public or perhaps even be uneasy about it.
