The lockdown was never a permanent solution. It intends to win time by spreading out infections, to put less pressure on the health care system, until the health care situation is ready to handle that increased pressure. "Sacrificing Grandma" sounds like a strawman to me.

I wonder how many people here actually thought this through?

The issue with the economy is that you can't just put it on 'pause'. You have tons of people who need money to buy things that no stimulus package can rightfully cover, the government needs an economy to provide said stimulus packages, and a lot of businesses are simply going to be gone following this epidemic no matter when the economy gets turned back on. It's like you have a speeding train going along. You can't just stop it on a dime; at best you slow it down and the faster you do so the greater the risk of being derailed. Even if you succeed in stopping it you'll have a lot of trouble getting it back up to speed again once it is stopped.

I'm not saying the economy should be restarted (I sure as heck don't want to get the virus); just that it's... a lot more complex a decision with really massive impact either which way. Either a ton of people get sick but will have jobs, or potentially fewer people get sick but leave quarantine only to have no job to go back to.

I've gone 6 days without work I get paid hourly that's a lot of money I've missed out on. Can't say I'm eager for anyone's loved ones to get sick but I can't just hide in the house while my bills pile up either.

It has to be put back on at some point, whether the virus is gone or not. It's not financially feasible for a Country to lock down for what supposed experts say could be up to a year. In the end Covid-19 is going to be another virus we're going to have to live with we can't remain locked away for the rest of our lives waiting for it to vanish.

The lockdowns aren't happening to wait until the virus ceases to be, they're happening to flatten the curve so we don't end up like Italy.

That aside... Yeah, if Trump actually tries to force this, it will be a disaster. "Fortunately," we still have a decent chunk of time before then for just how ****ed up New Yorkers (and in time, some other places) are right now to become clear and for even him to realize what we are up against. It'll be too late before he says the stuff he needs to, but he'll say it eventually. After all, he has an "I want to be a hero" complex.

New York, as of the last 24 hours or so, has now become Italy a week or two ago. Except its an Italy where panicked Americans who are waking up to how screwed they are in New York can flee to wherever their family may be in the nearby country. Some of whom will take the virus with them, either accidentally (no symptoms at the time), or on purpose (they are starting to feeling ill with SOMETHING and are afraid to let it get worse in a city where the medical facilities have already extended to their limit and are STILL full, so they run away to get sicker in a place that has actual facilities left).

Some other cities are approaching their basic, unexpanded limits already as well, and are now working to expand their limits.

Trump can say what he wants. Political speak from either side doesn't sway any viruses except memes and social media.

It's not an easy thing to be certain. I, personally, believe we should remain quarentined... but I say that knowing full well that we'll probably be killing the economy by doing so.
