Should adapt both The Dark Knight Returns and The Death of Superman. Those stories should have years of movies behind them (and I'd argue DKR shouldn't be part of a cinematic universe at all).

This gets thrown out a lot and I think it's a miss. You can establish characters in an ensemble film, and neither Superman nor Batman really need a lot of establishment. It would be pretty easy to kick off with a Batman and Superman team up film, or even a Justice League film.

They just sucked at establishing the characters. They couldn't even do Superman by himself in Man of Steel.

Why cant they just make solo films like Joker, Dark Knight Returns, Death of Superman, etc. And they dont have to have anything to do with each other.

yes the cinematic universe thing worked for Marvel but thats like a once in a lifetime miracle. That will never work for anyone else, ever.

I get that. Cause I'll watch random batman movies, causing inconsistency but idc. Same with the cartoons over the years.
Only when they really botch or change a character do I care how well it fits in with other storylines.
It is nice having the occasional trilogy and what not, but like you said, solo movies are pretty great themselves.

It's readily apparent most of Hollywood doesn't actually know the difference between good writing and bad writing, and are just taking existing IPs and making movies with them in hopes that it will make money.

starting with Dark Knight and Death of Superman COULD have been a good move if jumping into the next generation of stories... ... but they didn't do that, they went with more origin plots

I think it's partly because that's how comics work too a lot of the time
