The slightest of spoilers about item availability. Not plot.
You'll have a chance at at least two more Dark Seals. So you can still get Hubert into the Dark Mage and the subsequent Advance Dark class provided you get both. But honestly it is still better to run Hubert through Mage anyway to master the class and get Fiendish Blow. Then you can become the Dark Advanced class. Even if you never get any Dark Seals, Hubert's best class is a Master Class and does not need a Dark Seal to get. So fear not. Also, you might consider raising Hubert's riding skill.
Yea I don't really get the point of Dark Mage given it objectively better to just go Mage to Dark Bishop for anyone you are going for Dark Knight on.

After you master Mage you can switch to Dark Mage for double Misama's and Heartseeker. The main difference in growth is 5% charm which is rather marginal especially since Hubert already a personal to boost his gambits.

Thats a lot of extra grinding though when you dont really need it, like yea if you are going full caster its worth it but for dark knight you also want the spear stuff too.

It's not really grinding. If you mastery Mage you can switch Hubert to Dark Mage until he hits lvl 20 for Dark Bishop. Don't even need to mastery Dark Mage. They have the same growths outside of Charm and Dark Mage carries a +1 mag mod over Mage.

You need to cert Hubert as a Dark Mage to make him a Dark Bishop anyways.

Yes. They have to have passed the Dark Mage cert in order to become a Dark Bishop. This is not the same thing as mastering the Dark Mage class and getting Poison Strike.

All I'm saying is that if you mastered Mage and haven't hit lvl 20 to become a Dark Bishop, Dark Mage offers a bit more for Hubert than Mage does. +1 Mag Mod, Heartseeker, and Double Mimasas. Since you should already have passed the Dark Mage cert.

Oh yay, got a new unit! At the start of the game before I had a clue what I was doing I recruited Sylvain into my house, but I decided early on to focus entirely on house-related units including ones acquired through the story, rather than recruit new ones, as I felt it could take away from the story experience if my house is just full of all the people. So everyone else is lvl 13 - 14 (or 11 for the new one), but Sylvain is lvl 3 and has no exp except what he gets through lectures. Now I've unlocked a paralogue battle for him and I feel I'm going to have to babysit him heavily to get through it >_>. Also my new unit is sadly severely lacking in support options :(

I also continue to feel super overleveled. I'm only lvl 13 to 14, but I've unlocked 2 lvl 13 paralogues in addition to the lvl 13 mission of the month. I'll be in the 15s or 16s by the end of it.

Also I want more than 5 ability slots D:

When you enter a battle go to Units and on any unit deployed for battle press Y to set the adjutant for that unit. Do note it is limited so you can only have 1/2/3 set at a time depending on your professor rank.

I agree with the OP. I've tried like 3 times to play it from the beginning. But each time I only get like 30 minutes in before becoming completely overwhelmed. Damn my short attention span. The amount of info in this topic alone reaffirms my feelings. I want to like it and get into it, as I've loved prior FE's. But this shit is just too much. I just want to enjoy some damn turn-based strategy gameplay, dammit. All this "you have to feed your 4th favorite character a hot meal on the 13th day of the month at the 9th hour, unless she's a warrior then you have to do a dance on the first Saturday." Yeah, too much.

So I did ONE optional fighting thing one day that was just that. Only other fighting I've done on my days off were mandatory battles, quest battles and paralogues. I currently have two units lvl 16 and the rest are all 17 or 18. Next story mission recommended lvl is 13.

Can someone explain how exactly beast fights work? I get that a gambit draws their attention and they have several life bars with increasing capabilities as they near death. But the barrier system, confusion and armor breaks (and anything else of note I haven't mentioned) I'm just completely lost on.

What's overwhelming about it?

You go through a bunch of unskippable, repetitive cutscenes called "activities" then you go through the extremely casualized and watered down chapters. The core gameplay of the franchise now just a mere minigame.

Who cares if you don't optimize your free skill EXP properly? The only reason the game isn't easier than Fates is because weapon durability is back so you don't get the same bullshit where soloing with Ryoma or Xander is more efficient than playing the game "normally".

Barriers essentially have 2 health. Normal hits deal 1 health and Effective damage deals 2 health. Gambits will deal 2 damage to the tile you target and all other tiles that get hit by the gambit take 1 health.

Monsters when they use their special attack will automatically heal their barriers back to their max health (some monster have barriers that can only have a max of 1 health).

Most monsters also are weak to either swords, lances, or axes. They'll have an icon that shows which one they are weak too.

When you break a barrier, the monster is stunned until after the next combat it is in or until the end of the turn. When you break all barriers you get some ore and the monster is stunned until start of your next turn. Also when you break all the barriers, the monster's special will no longer replenish it's barriers.

But the barrier system, confusion and armor breaks (and anything else of note I haven't mentioned) I'm just completely lost on.

The basics of it is attack the barrier squares to break them, break all 4 and the monster is stunned for a turn and you get some crafting materials.

Most monsters have 4 yellow squares, that's the barrier, and you simply attack it to destroy each piece. There's 3 "phases" of each barrier square, full, cracked, and none. Attacking a barrier does reduced damage to the monster and if you do enough damage, it will crack the square. Attack the cracked square to break it. Gambits do a little extra damage to barriers and also attacks more than 1 square at a time. Usually for gambits, the square that your cursor is on will go straight from full to gone, while the other squares you hit get cracked. Then just bring in your other units to attack the cracked squares to remove them.

If you need a monster dead and can't afford keeping them alive to get their crafting material (you should always try to break them all), you can break 1 square and aim your attacks at the opening. Hitting a barrier does reduced damage, but attacking and open square will do full damage.

Speaking of charm, I feel I'm not properly utilizing the battalion/gambit system. When I first unlocked it I bought a couple of battalions and just stuck one on everyone. It's largely the same thing for all of them. I think I gave Dorothea a healing one I never use. Hubert has a fire spell one that completely devastates grouped enemies, and Linhardt has one that gives a speed buff I've found great use for. But other than that It's just a rush attack that locks their movement for a turn and which I rarely use. I feel like I'm fucking this up.

Look for a battalion with the stride gambit. It gives everyone in range a huge movement boost.
Retribution is great as well, since it allows your units to counter attacks from any range.
Otherwise, look at the stat bonuses they give. They can be rather significant, like a big boost to strength and crit, shit like that.
And of course, the AoE gambits are incredibly useful for breaking armor on monsters, since doing that gives you materials to upgrade/repair your more rare equipment like the Relics.

As I recall, nobility in Fodlan is pretty significantly tied to the Crest system. So much so that noble children born to a family without a Crest will inherit nothing, while their Crest-carrying siblings will inherit everything.

Since Petra's country doesn't have crests at all, she may as well be a commoner in Fodlan for all she is worth. Her value as a hostage wouldn't extend beyond how her country values her.

Also, she isnt a noble in the medieval fantasy sense. Her country is more tribalistic than feudal.

Steal has uses, but it's very dependent on enemies having stealable items that aren't dropped when the enemy is defeated.

For example, on the Battle of Eagle and Lion in Chapter 7 the enemy house leaders are carrying rings that can be stolen which are useful to have.

In later chapters, some enemies carry anti-effectiveness shields which can only be only be stolen.

If you have the expansion pass there's a repeatable quest every month that gives you a stat booster by collecting enough of an item. This item can only obtained by defeating some enemies who drop it or stealing it from enemies who don't drop it.
