It's been so long since I've played cave story, but I would say they are all pretty close in terms of difficulty. Some just have more combat and less platforming, and vice versa.

Personally, Cave Story>Ori>Celeste>Hollow Knight. Hollow night is the only one I'm not a fan of.

Ori 2 might edge out 1 but I need to finish it first

Difficulty: Hollow Knight > Ori > Celeste (main story only) > Cave Story
Quality: Ori > Celeste > HK > CS

Celeste is the most difficult by far if you include the non-main story stuff though (some of HK's post-release optional content is also really hard).

I mean, it isn't but okay.

Hollow Knight is better than Ori specifically because Hollow Knight is harder and thus more rewarding.

Frustrationness: Hollow Knight > Cave Story >> Celeste >> Ori (honestly can't imagine what's frustrating there)

Quality: Celeste > Cave Story > Hollow Knight = Ori

I played it for about 10 hours before getting bored, and now it's been a year since I touched it with no real desire to go back

I really like Hollow Knight, but some optional parts of the game are incredibly frustrating. I'm talking multiple minutes worth of perfect platforming, where a single mistake sends you entirely back to the start, and the platforming isn't necessarily fun. Just tedious.

Ori has the best feeling movement by far, once you know an area you can gracefully dart through it, it's pure joy.

The worst part was the spike parts in the white tower. I don't know if those things can even be done consistently without being hit. That was hella luck to get thru on my end.

Are you talking about Cuphead? Cuphead isn't actually that bad in terms of difficulty if you don't try to beat it on expert difficulty (which has no additional content, just harder fights)

In terms of enjoyment, Celeste > Ori > Hollow Knight > Cave Story. I've beaten all of them aside from Cave Story. Also Hollow Knight has some bullshit requirements for the super-extra-true ending, so I'm never gonna get that.

For main story, sure. But beating Cuphead's main story means you've seen like 99% of what the game has to offer.

Main story is like <50% of Celeste. And I'd argue beating Radiant in Hollow Knight is harder than beating Cuphead.

Also these games are very different so it's kind of weird to compare them!

It's a weird complaint but personally I feel like you have too many tools in Ori so the platforming isn't challenging enough. I'm sure they COULD make difficult levels that are super challenging like Celeste end-game but there's just nothing like that.

Also the combat in both Ori games is pretty bad. They tried to fix it with Ori 2 and it's certainly better there but still not great.

Ori was beautiful but the controls are floaty and the story is cliche. The skill tree was rather pointless

Played first 3 hours of HK and it's not even close to the same level of quality as Ori yet.

It's ight but man it's going to have to do a lot to start impressing.

Celeste I just have no interest.

Cave Story was great though

Ori > Cave Story >> HK? > Celeste (which I've watched enough of to know)

But usually in HK the benches are super close to boss fights and sure if you die randomly in a hard area it can be somewhat difficult to get back and kill your shadow but it's like dark souls in that aspect. Once you've been playing a while traversing most of the map is a breeze anyways.
Theres also that rotten egg guy that can revive your soul for you if you're afraid to go back

They're close, but usually metroidvanias put them immediately adjacent or one room over without any enemies in the way. HK isn't that kind.

I would call it one of the game's (very few) flaws, along with not having enough quick travel points.

I cant argue too much there were a few instances where they were a little too far away, I agree about there needing to be a lot more travel points.

It's trying to replicate the Dark Souls boss run, which is fine except that in Dark Souls you can sprint past all the enemies. HK's movement is too slow for that (plus you want to kill a few things for mana) which I think is worse than not having enough travel points, although that's an issue too.
