We had similar starting time for the last contest (7:00 PM EST initially, changing to 8:00 PM EST after the DST switch), so the comparison to the previous contest is fine.

It's truly a pleasure to be in an actual contest season again. Last character battle and the years contest were just not good. But this one? I can feel it. It's going to be good.

Contest season is my favorite time of the year, when it happens. There's nothing quite like it.

I took Hollow Knight without thinking. Sure most Indie games are weak, but HK is more of an exception. How much it's winning by is a bit surprising though...

Well I lost this one already (I picked Tales of Berseria over Hollow Knight). I forgot everyone loved being a masochist this decade when I believe the gaming market is already over saturated with Dark Souls like games that people would pick something else. Man was I wrong.

Losing out on 1 point matches means nothing. It's only damaging when you take that game 2 rounds or more. The big money is made when you get the upset pick in later rounds!

I think my tiebreaker is off though. I went with 2.65 million, wish I'd gone with like 3.5m.

2.65 million is looking far better than 3.5m with the way the vote totals are going so far.

When the bracket first went up, I originally recommended 1900000 to 2300000. This was later revised and changed to 2100000 to 2500000 after seeing the slightly higher vote totals in the regular polls as a consequence of the ongoing coronavirus situation, which I assumed would probably carry over to this contest.

Yah I filled out my bracket before looking at the board and was surprised to see this was a hotly debated match. Hollow Knight is easily one of the most talked about and beloved indie games on this site while Berseria is not only niche, but even a lot of the people who have played it don't actually like it THAT much.

I'd also say that these results should make anyone who picked the Bravely Default upset tomorrow pretty worried. Looks like despite this being JRPGFAQs, you can't just pick a bottom rung JRPG to beat games that are widely talked about and relevant on this site (which MHW is, based on flitting through various boards)

I think people here severely underestimated Hollow Knight. With all the talk of respect voting, it always seemed odd that a game with a good reception from a B-tier at best franchise was the favourite over one of the most respected games of the generation. Though I certainly didnt expect a stomp like this.

Really, dont think of indie games as distinct from other games. They are just games without a publisher or big company attached. They are taking the place of small to mid-size games and games from smaller publishers that have become less frequent.

The issue that indie games face is their general lack of pre-release promotion relative to the AAA games. At events such as E3, indie games are generally relegated to the indie game montages in the E3 press conferences, which is a rapid fire segment showing at most 15-30 seconds of gameplay from each upcoming game before moving into another game in the montage. Thus, indie games face an uphill battle to garner the attention of gamers. Combined with the huge availability of so many indie games means that it's harder for any specific indie game to get widely played on this site.

I originally had Hollow Knight > FFXV in my bracket, but with the contest delay I saw the match overlapping with a major Final Fantasy release and changed it. I think Hollow Knight will lose to bad timing and had a legit chance to win otherwise.
