Audrey Tang, Taiwan's digital minister and the youngest minister without portfolio to hold office, utilized artificial intelligence to harness data and created real-time digital updates to alert citizens of risky areas to avoid and a live map of local supplies of face masks.

Taiwanese Vice President Chen Chien-Jen praised Tang in a Facebook post, calling her "not only a key figure in our national disease prevention efforts but also set an example of application of artificial intelligence in disease prevention."

Enough cannot be said about Audrey Tang and I highly recommend everyone to Google her.

38-year old transgender who dropped out of middle school in Taiwan, became an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, worked as consultant for Apple on computational linguistics, and was given the job of Digital Minister in Taiwan despite having zero political portfolio.

Her main contribution was developing numerous apps and policies that, by utilizing big data and digital innovation, helped Taiwan control the coronavirus outbreak. The key was offering the necessary transparency that enabled the access to medical care for all civilians in the country.

So far, there are only roughly 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Taiwan, a number that is much lower than far away countries like Denmark and Finalnd, despite Taiwan being literally right to China with millions of travelers between the two countries.

One more take away is that Taiwan is a democratic country that is just as bipartisan as the USA. Yet, they were able to come together during this crisis and responded in the best way possible. It really shows the different strong leadership can make, even in a democracy where people often believe would take too long to properly implement any policies.

I guess that last point is why so few Western media are willing to report on Audrey. Luckily, I am here to spread this information so everyone can be more educated on this topic.
