Anybody who thinks this show is less than stellar is lunar. Season 1 was 10/10 and season 2 was 8/10. Overall it gets a 9.5/10 though.

Where does it cut between seasons? Ive watched it twice and noticed a slight change partway through, but never knew it was 2 seasons.

I will agree with you though, the first half of it is absurdly good. It might be the most compelling season of television I've ever seen. Seeing the obsessive descent into madness, the self righteousness. It's really fantastic.

It was the second anime I ever watched, and completely blew me out of the water. Im not a huge anime fan by any means, but death note completely reset my expectations for what the medium could be after shows like Naruto/one piece/etc.

One thing that really blows me away is just how tight the show is. There is very little fluff and it moves at an absolute breakneck pace. It's what, 12 hours probably with no commercials? If you've got 6 hours free and turn it on you'll find yourself halfway through the show without even noticing.

I've only watched two animes as an adult, and Death Note was one of them. I didn't regret watching this one. I didn't regret watching Your Lie in April, either.

One of the things I enjoyed most about it was how well-constructed the investigation was. It made complete sense. If someone challenged you to find the identity of someone who was mysteriously killing people, youd have no idea how to do it. But the show found a way to slowly but surely connect the dots in a coherent manner. Sure, at times there were some leaps bigger than others but for the most part it was incredibly cogent.

It is very good. I am very harsh on the last third because of just how much I hate Near, though his shit is WAAAAAY worse in the anime than the manga, even if I despise him regardless.

That's because it wasn't. Death Note was only 1 season long.

Death Note is one of the very rare 3 cour series.

But it all aired at once, yes.

Death Note is indeed super good! Truly spectacular manga adapted by a mega-talented and passionate team.

I agree, and I'm also glad its a question (in my opinion) they don't definitely answer for the viewer. Of course Kira being delusional and borderline drunk with power helps answer it, but it's a great question of ends justifying the means.

The only anime to give me the same vibe as Death Note is The Promised Neverland, in the sense that they are both intense thrillers based around battle-of-wits style conflict. (Though, I will say I didn't watch Parasyte)

Death Note is one of those works that gets constantly memed and parodied such that its easy to forget how goddamn great it was until you revisit it.
