Personally, I think our spirits live on. I don't believe in heaven or hell or anything like that, but our energy has to go somewhere, energy can't be created or destroyed so that means it has to go somewhere in the universe after we die

My belief (not just mine, but I came by it organically), is that we all live each others lives. We are all part of one conciousness that split itself up initially, seperating the memories from each life, so they could be lived fresh, and to fight eternal boredom.

So you don't ever die, you just move on to another perspective. In addition, all the actions you do towards others around you, you will eventually live through.

This is actually in most religions if you look for it.

Also that reminds me of a Bill Hicks quote that Tool used in Third Eye

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

I often wonder about these sorts of things. Like, why does consciousness exist? Does it just innately occur in any computational device with enough computational power? Will artificial computers develop consciousness, or does it need to be an organic brain? What is the most primitive and simple brain that can still possess consciousness?

I wonder if humanity will ever know.

This outlook is common in folk religions, sure, but not in any of the Abrahamic ones. I used to think like this, its very human to do so.

But I do believe in heaven, purgatory and hell. Spirits who go to heaven can traverse all realms, spirits in purgatory are lost (many appear on earth as ghosts) and spirits in hell are trapped in tormenting pain. This is all for human spirits. Thats what I believe anyway.

The thought of my own death is my biggest fear and yet the only guarantee in life. It's a irrational fear as I won't even know when it happens or that I'm dead but because out brains are programmed to fear danger my brain reacts to that thought on a high level. I never used to give it much thought but since I developed what seems to be anxiety issues a few years ago from panic attacks and thinking I would die it highlights everything more. Being aware of ones mortality is both a blessing and a curse. I don't believe in a afterlife too. I can only describe my view on death as being like when you've been put to sleep or knocked out only there is no waking up and you are no longer breathing. I wish I believed in a afterlife as that certainly would help with the fear of death and you won't even know if it's true or not. Still it is what it is.

That "somewhere" consists pretty much entirely of heat and some chemical energy (in the form of ATP) for the organisms that decompose us. The concept of "your energy" doesn't continue to exist as a discrete unit, it disperses into multiple other forms and spreads through the universe accordingly.

I've kind of considered that consciousness might not actually exist. Each thought we have just has an imprint of the things in short term memory, making it appear continuous. Your brain basically stamps who it thinks you are onto each thought you have so really the you of right now is a totally different person with the same stamp as the you of 5 minutes ago.

You think you are alive because you remember being alive but memory is a static thing. Just the imprint of what happened at that point in time.

It's kinda like how you think of your arm as one solid arm but really it's just a collection of tiny ass cells working together and you could remove any single cell from that arm and that cell would no longer be part of your arm. The same idea, but just with thoughts instead of cells.

I'd like all that to be wrong though. It'd mean none of us are actually alive.
