I like how more risqu this stuff is than a typical 90s sitcom. Just finished the ep with the novelist Ted was sweet on.

I wonder if the opening part where they kept meeting over and over was what was being parodied in a similar Mr. Show skit. Or maybe one got an idea from the other...I'd have to check the airing dates. If it was done independ of one another, that'd be pretty awesome.

Up to season two. Europe really goes gaga over those Eurovision contests, huh? Episodes like that are still relevant twenty-odd years later. The song about the pretty horse and taking the horse to the dentist was hilarious, as was the rival priests' big musical number (which lost). The episode about the stolen whistle was a pretty good parody of small towns having nothing going on. I grew up in one of those areas and sometimes you'd read the sheriff's report for goings-on, only to find things like "police responded to barking dog" and stuff.

BTW, I've always wanted to watch Fawlty Towers, so maybe I'll do that one next.

Hmm, haven't seen any of those shows. Honestly, the only BBC shows I've seen all episodes of are Sherlock and Luther. Back in the days of watching PBS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBS), I've definitely seen eps of Are You Being Served? and Keeping Up Appearances, though. Not sure if they show any other British shows.

No, I was just using that as an example of how British shows show up in America. Haven't watched PBS in years, so I dunno what their scheduling is like. I doubt some of Father Ted's humor/language would jibe with our TV standards over here, haha.

I already watched the episode where all the Craggy Isle priests dress up as Elvis. Pretty good one, especially the ending.

Just saw the Ted = Racist episode, lol. I could guess a few punchlines, but it was still pretty good, especially the part where Ted takes refuge in the Irish pub and it's populated only by Chinese people playing the jigs. The short clip about this episode was the impetus to watching the series in the first place, actually.

I love that Christmas Special but what's weird is the guy who wrote it absolutely hated it.

IF you listen to the audio commentary he spends the entire time embarrased, apologizing for how bad it is and begging for it to end as it's so awful.

And I'm like "But it's good doe.."

kinda

It's more safe than Ted and a lot of the jokes are about life in small rural communities that might go over an urban metropolitan head. There are very few religious jokes, that's just a backdrop

Jokes in vicar of dibley are more "hey the old man is telling boring stories again, what a character. " and less shoving stones up peoples asses

plus the latter stuff they did was awful. Only the early stuff is good

Red Dwarf is 17.463 times better

I wasn't expecting it to be the exact same as Ted, just swimming in similar waters. So the Brit list is:

  • Red Dwarf
  • The IT Crowd
  • Blackadder
  • Vicar of Dibley
  • Black Books
  • Jeeves & Wooster

I'd dispute Dibley having the same sort of humour as Father Ted tbh.

It has a less risky (and risqu) type of humour, and none of the absurtist trappings of Father Ted.

It's not a bad show (a bit involving Christmas Dinner is brilliant in fact), but in general it's a much safer, cosier and more wholesome sort of comedy (a Sunday Evening to Ted's Friday Night).

The reason why is because John Cleese wrote them and he is a perfectionist. He says he is proud of all but 1 episode

He used all his best ideas and didnt want to continue at a lower standard

I think he is right, look at the Simpsons or friends or any show that goes on Forever
