Jesus, the results of toda's poll says that most of the people that come to GameFAQs are all rich since they never sell their used video games at all. I can't imagine keeping a $60 game that was so bad I never want to touch it again. I could use that money for other stuff.

People aren't always like that because of wealth. In my case, I just seem to have a good eye for games. The last time I paid full price for a game that was so bad I never want to touch it again was Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly on GameCube, which I traded in toward LoZ Wind Waker.

I have a substantial backlog, and I regularly go months at a time without buying any new games (this won't be one of those months). Last game that caught my eye had a Metacritic rating in the 40s, which I ended up rather enjoying and would probably be replaying had I not been hit with an itch to pull a game I bought a couple years ago but never finished out of my backlog.

xjayguyx posted...

Don't be. That option doesn't account for however many people (myself included) who buy most of their games digitally at least in part because they don't regularly sell their games.

Digital cuts out middlemen like gamestop. Every digital sale is worth more to publishers/developers than a physical sale by a pretty wide margin. Theres also no risk since you can't overprint or under print a digital release.

Making it easier for a game to be successful means it's easier for devs to stay afloat without having to appeal to the widest possible audience. Digital is the way to go. It's also convenient to not have to go anywhere to get it and to near instantly have access as long as you have your account even on another device. It boggles my mind that anyone outside of collectors would still buy physical knowing it's worse for devs at the same cost to you.

I can't imagine keeping a $60 game that was so bad I never want to touch it again.

1) You're assuming people pay full list
2) You're assuming that the games are worth all that much when you go to sell them

The fact that there's very little money in selling most games I'd be willing to part with is why I don't bother to sell them.

KaijunoKami posted...
I could use that money for other stuff.

Most of us aren't hard up for the $5 or $10 that would come from selling a lot of used titles. And the ones that are moderately valuable are things I'd rather keep. For example, I own a still-sealed copy of Rule of Rose which is apparently hard to find these days

https://venturebeat.com/community/2013/11/11/rule-of-rose-a-flawed-masterpiece-that-you-will-never-play/

I paid maybe $25 or $30 for it years ago and just never got around to playing it. If you look around on a lot of sites like ebay, etc, people are apparently attempting to sell used copies for over a hundred or two hundred.

I think maybe a view the creator is getting at is that so many of us as kids had to sell our games to get different ones.
I'd get a few new games for my birthday and stuff, and then throughout the year I'd trade in games so I could play even more.

As an adult, I rarely return a game at all; usually only if it doesn't work.

Right? I almost never preorder or buy brand new games, unless they've got day one content I can't get in any other way, I have enough at the time to afford it, and I know I'm likely to love the game (for example, most of the FF series, or stuff I've played in demos). I certainly don't buy so many games at full price that I would end up with enough games I didn't want to keep to make trading them in worth the money.

OP, your interpretation of the poll is so ridiculous I can't even. I have to save for months to buy a full price game if I want to. That's why I'm not stupid enough to go randomly buying crap I'm not sure I'll like. I don't take risks on brand new, unused physical copies of games, because I've never really been able to afford that. There are plenty enough people like you out there, who are comfortable blowing their cash on full price games against the chance you might not like them and would decide to return them, so I don't need to do it to keep up the industry. Who is it you think ends up buying the games you trade in, if not people like me? Dope =P

Speaking of penniea on the dollar friemd of mine tried selling a game to game stop and they refused to buy it saying the computer said it was only worth half a penny. Some bs about it was a online oriented game and the servers had since shut down. Ignoring the fact it did have single player and local multiplayer.

Anyways ive been so poor ive had to sell games just to have money to do other things i enjoy (never for anything necessary) but last time I sold any games was literally just cause I had zero intention on playing the games ever again. Uncharted 4 (came with my ps4 and I wasnt impressed) and for honor because I found only the online gameplay fun but i decided ps plus wasnt worth keeping.

Games don't resell for much anyway, even if I wanted to sell them, so why bother?

How do I afford not selling them? Well...
Until just this past gen or so, I would NEVER get a console until the new gen was out and the old ones were super marked down. The games in turn also tended to be cheaper by then.
(Now with all the stupid pre-order only content and the fact that most games are half price within a year anyway and within 2-3 years all but the most common titles are gone from store shelves and can end up becoming MORE EXPENSIVE than at launch due to rarity, it kinda forced me to keep up w/ the times more)

Nope. I totally disagree. The only thing you get out of digital is a computer screen telling you you are borrowing that game.

With a physical copy, not only do you own the game for as long as you choose to do so, but you can put it on your shelf for display so you can enjoy something you put money towards. Not to mention that you never have to worry about the game no longer being available over time on your machine if the license were to expire, and you can let friends borrow it.

Oh, and if you don't like the game, you can sell it. You can't do that with a digital copy.

I will point out also if a game really sucks and you buy it at $60 the market starts to get flooded with them especially if it was a game everyone thought would be great and bought it day 1.

I have seen some $60 titles go to like $20 or less used in the matter of a few weeks because the game sucks heavily. Keep in mind I mean $20 is what places like Gamestop would sell it for meaning they will give you a few bucks.

I've purchased like less than 10 (physical) video games in the past decade.

  • Pokemon Y
  • Monster Hunter Portable something or other
  • Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2
  • Tales of Graces f
  • Pokemon SwSh double pack (counts as 2 games I guess)
8 games in 10 years. Also 3 consoles (2DS, PS3, Switch). Why would I sell any of them?
To be honest, 2 of them weren't available on PC at the time of their purchase, 1 I got only because I bought a used PS3 and the others are locked by Nintendo's proprietary malware.

I'd love to sell some of my PC games but that would destroy those dank profit margins on PC.
