A few weeks ago, we noticed a lump on his back right leg and took him to the vet. They said it was an abscess and we set up surgery for it.

Long story short, it's cancer.

We set up a visit with an oncologist, but I was already assuming the worst. Thankfully it is contained locally and hasn't spread to any of the worrisome places (specifically lungs and the surrounding bones), so they are fairly confident this will have a positive outcome.

On a fairly related note, vet bills are expensive.

Pets, much like humans, are great at adapting and overcoming setbacks like this. It'll be sad to see it happen to him, but after a few weeks, he'll be acting like nothing happened, and you'll love him more than ever.

Yep! I'm actually feeling pretty good about it since it means there is a treatment option. Also, the vet said they have a saying that cats and dogs are three-legged animals with a spare.

You haven't mentioned this specifically, but am I right to assume it is one of its front legs? If so, cats can easily adapt to that. It's the removal of a hind leg that's going to be tough to adjust to.

It's his back right leg, and the vet said it's actually easier for them to adapt to losing a rear leg.
