Welcome to the topic where all 180 VGMC retirees are ranked! (Maybe this has been done before?) Having missed the first twelve VGMCs for the most part, perhaps Im the LEAST qualified person to rank the music, but screw it, Im doing it because I feel like it! If it wasnt for listening to the list of retirees and realizing what I missed out on, I wouldnt have gotten myself involved with VGMC XIII in the first place! I view this topic as a way to atone for my sin of missing all the previous contests. Its also pretty much the only way I can retroactively get involved with past VGMCs!!!

Every year Board 8 has a major video game music contest. All music that makes it to at least round five gets retired from all future contests. All such music is part of a VGM Hall of Fame of sorts.

Ive listened to all of the music many times over. I also did my best to listen carefully to all the details of the music. I will make no attempt to objectively measure the music in any way. Instead, I will rate them based on how the music makes me feel. Now, granted, I will be mentioning many aspects of the music ( objective things). These are merely factors in how the music makes me feel!

I apologize in advance for ranking poorly some music you love, because Im not going to apologize in the write-ups! Now, unlike other vgm-ranking topics, every single retiree has been proven well-liked. With that in mind, please be courteous whenever you disagree. Oh, and a warning: I have a heavy bias toward JRPG music! (hello thar, Player0 and TRE!) I promise, however, the top of the list will NOT be all Gust music!

To be honest, my writing skills and music knowledge arent the greatest! I do have music theory knowledge, so the write-ups are going to be a bit technical -- in other words, poor mans Mycro write-ups ;). Expect grammatical (and other kinds of) errors. Expect to see a lot of ooh, I like this, I like this, I LOVE that! But, hey, consider this advantage: my write-ups have been created in advance! This means I will be moving through them this much faster than some of the other music rankers!

Finally, there will be a few other minor surprises in store! Ah, lets just get the surprise over with: there are two game series that I Iike very much that dont have any music retired: Ace Attorney and Pokemon. My top three from each of those series will be ranked alongside the retirees! In addition, my top ten or twelve (non-retired) music from VGMC XIII will be ranked alongside them!

(More in the following post...)

If you see errors, please let me know.

Count by tier:

Abysmal (0-0.9) - 0 retirees
Terrible (1-1.9) - 0
Bad (2-2.9) - 0
Not Good (3-3.9) - 1
Mediocre (4-4.9) - 1
Decent (5-5.9) - 9
Good (6-6.9) - 27
Great (7-7.9) - 37
Excellent (8-8.9) - 64
Amazing (9-9.4) - 24
Phenomenal (9.5-9.9) - 16
Godly (10) - 1

That's based on preliminary ratings. After revising the ratings and rankings (currently in progress), the numbers will be a bit different. Im likely going to end up moving a lot of ratings down.

180) The Ninja Warriors (Sega CD) - Daddy Mulk
https://youtu.be/63PiaOJEoe8

Composer: Hisayoshi Ogura
Score: 3.6/10 (Not Good)
Favorite part: The first three seconds.
VGMC History: VGMC 8 (Lost R2), VGMC 9 (Lost R1), VGMC 11 (Lost R6 to Flying Clouds, Drifting Haze)

Heeeeeeyyy, its my first write-up! How exciting!!!!! Daddy Mulk kicks off with a familiar sound effect! (Chrono Trigger, anyone?) After that, the intro is catchy and kind of okay! After that, though, it just throws out one uninspired idea after another. Almost of it just follows the VI-VII-i chord progression, which is one of my least favorite progressions assuming other aspects of the music fall flat, which it does in this case. Most of the sounds used Im not fond of...the bass is annoying and the electronic scat singing is AWFUL. Generic repetitive impromptu-type ideas all over the place with too much emphasis on tonic. 2:24 has practically nothing going on. Ill give credit that it switches to Dorian a few times. I guess that helps. Hey, I found an instrument that I like the bells starting at 1:27 are nice! 3:11 has a cool little ascending wind thing. But the negatives outweigh the positives. Five minutes is way too long for this music! I never plan to listen to this again!

EDIT: Whoops! Ummm... see the new rating.

179) Super Castlevania IV - Bloody Tears
https://youtu.be/QOWUSsFar-s
Composer: Kenichi Matsubara
Score: 4.8/10 (Mediocre)
VGMC History: VGMC III (Lost R1), VGMC VII (Lost R6 to Potential for Anything)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/QOWUSsFar-s?t=49

In come the trolls? It perplexes me why this is the sole Castlevania retiree. I like most of the other popular themes more than this, and with Bloody Tears I prefer the NES version (the sound quality here is pretty bad for SNES standards). The intro is an overused Bach Taccata/Fugue pattern in the most uninteresting way possible. (I think Toccata in a Blood-Soaked Darkness uses it much better). I do like some of the instrumentation the bass pizzicatos, for one. Also, the organ at 0:24 is ok. Plus the very last part of the loop at 0:49-- I really like the thunder-like percussion used here, and the way things die down after is kind of ...haunting. Overall, though, I just dont care about it.

Nice! Glad to see this!

Daddy Mulk Sega-CD (which is not good) retiring and being the popular one over the original arcade one (which is absolutely drop dead amazing) has always been something kinda sad to me. Glad people know about it in general though!

Also, really good point spread, probably about around what my own point spread would be.

I went through the list of retirees and I only found 3 that I considered outright bad. I don't know every retired track from memory even after reading the name, but I do remember at least a majority of them so I'd say that's a pretty low rate. Though, the list would become much larger if I were to expand it to songs I just feel lukewarm on.

178) Crypt of the Necrodancer - Six Feet Thunder
https://youtu.be/HVU27pIZUrQ
Composer: Danny Baranowksy
Score: 5.3/10 (Decent)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/HVU27pIZUrQ?t=71
VGMC History: VGMC 11 (Lost R5 to goldenslaughterer)

Eh, maybe its not AWFUL, but Im having a hard time liking much of this. As far as music from the same game, I prefer Portabellohead by a long shot. Electricity-pumping beat is not bad, and Im sure thats where the track gets its name from. The overall instrumentation is alright. Melodies are okay, but a little stereotypical. Theres some more of that Bach/Dracula stuff, which is "meh"... (two tracks in a row now with that!) 0:58 it goes WILD and attempts to excite us, but it falls flat. 1:10 is a bit unexpected with its mood change, and while the progression is stereotypical, its a step above the predominant/dominant/tonic stuff that comprises the vast majority of the harmonies. I do like the ARPEGGIOS! that the synth does there, too. Thats probably my favorite part! Then back to "whatever". The last few bars are cheesy with it refusing to let get away from that "dominant in minor"...however, if it ended on the standard tonic it would have been RIDICULOUSLY cheesy, so I'm glad it didn't do that, at least!

177) Persona 3 - Memories of You
Series Rank: 4 of 4
Composer: Shoji Meguro
Score: 5.4/10 (Decent)
VGMC History: VGMC VIII (Lost R4), VGMC IX (Lost to Face of Fact)
Favorite Part: Anywhere with the reverberating piano

Aw, I was hoping it would have the Persona 4+5 singer! Granted, this is Japanese. Still, that hurts enough to drop this a tier below the songs from those games. Piano reverb is very tasteful especially when that rhythm's used! The IV-iii-ii-I ostinato is kind of boring. The verses are harmonically more interesting, though, and I like the bluesy flat third vs. the sharp seventh in places. 0:52 chills down a bit in a way I like (guitar here adds nice spice here). 1:09 is kind of fun, though, because that extended simple rhythmic idea thats catchy...actually, no, I changed my mind. I DONT like it. >_> I do LOVE the crescendoing eighth notes right before that, though! Overall, I just have a hard time caring about it or getting enjoyment out of it, though.

176)Sora Rendezvous

Composer: Deku
Score: 5.6/10 (Mediocre)
VGMC History: VGMC VI (Lost R5 to Battlefield Flower Violin)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/N5zedzugaRA?t=43

I often have issues with trance music because of how LOUD the beat is. THUMP THUMP THUMP. But at least in this case, its not all loud, plus it has some cool stuff. Calm parts like 0:46 are much nicer, especially the bVI-bVII-I (major I, not minor i) going on...ahhh, the ambience on top of that is very pleasing on the ears. The xylophone-like 16th notes really add to the fun there, too. The melodic patterns at 1:52 are pretty catchy, the way certain notes change over the changing harmonies, though theres the THUMP THUMP THUMP holding it back (it becomes really nice when it quiets down!). HEY, the quiet stuff comes back a bit later, too, with some stylish vocals emphasizing the 7ths/9ths and stuff.

175) Monty on the Run - In-Game Music
https://youtu.be/bmpTIDTERoQ
Composer: Rob Hubbard
Score: 5.6/10 (Decent)
VGMC History: VGMC III (lost R3), VGMC IV (lost R1), VGMC V (Lost to Battle 3 from Lufia II)
Favorite Part: 0:10-0:30

THIS ranking might be controversial. >_> I suppose this is about as close as it gets to something grand among true 8-bit music. I dont like this one a whole lot but it has some positives. First, the negatives: the last half with the 50s rock n roll bluesy impromtu stuff s just.agh, no. And those sounds effectsannoying. I can understand why many like that part, but its not my cup of tea. Also, the sound in general is really muddy compared to most NES music, but I guess the hardware is to blame. (some of the noises sound like wet farts) Now on to the positives: The <i>beginning<i> is the best part to me. The sound effects at the start here are more to my liking here very suspenseful. The first section sounds so much like LInk to the Pasts Aghanim/Ganon pre-battle music! (maybe this is where Koji Kondo got his idea?) Its cool how the ascending harmonies rub against the same bass note. 0:40 is great, too those agile melodies are nifty over the changing chord progressions. 0:56 has those cool minor licks that get transposed up a few times then come back down! Yeah, most of my favorite stuff is in the first 45 seconds or so. And then it all repeats! Aw, yeah. It then develops through about 2:05 and repeats some ideas before going into the bluesy stuff. Overall, its a mixed bag 7/10 early on vs. 3/10 later on I guess Ill compromise and give more weight to the good part 5.6/10 it is!

174) Donkey Kong Country - Gangplank Galleon
Series ranking: 5 out of 5

Composer: ???? (it may or may not be David Wise?)
Score: 5.7/10 (Decent)
VGMC History: VGMC III (Lost R5 to "Reset" ~ "Thank You" Version)
Favorite Part: 0:15 - 0:26

In come the trolls, part II? Heres yet another ranking that will undoubtedly make somebody unhappy! Somehow the overall sound of this isnt very satisfying. The bass ideas are not my cup of tea. As Ive stated before, [i]-VI-VII-i tends to fall flat for me, unless theres really awesome stuff to make up for it. Ive never really been a fan of the DKC electric guitar, either their melodies are boring to me, too. The dynamic hairpins they do arent bad, though! The pirate music at the beginning, though I like that a lot more! The harmonica + accordian accompaniment is awesome there. The way the happy-go-lucky feeling very sneakily melts away into suspense before the shift of style is cool, too! I did just notice that 1:16 re-uses the melodic idea from the beginning, so thats a plus!

173) 7th Dragon 2020 - The Last Location of Mankind
https://youtu.be/6OayHkxRIhw
Composer: Yuzo Koshiro
Score: 5.8/10 (Decent)
VGMC History: VGMC VI (lost R5 to Winterbliss)
Favorite part: 0:27 0:46

The style reminds of ParagonX9s remixes. The atmosphere is really nice its a very dark ambient techno sound, indeed. Very full, too. Every sound used is nice, but the bells are probably my favorite sounds I wish they were used more! I enjoy the ascending crescendo sound effects such as at :44. Melody has 4ths/tritones/7ths on top of the harmony, so thats kind of nice. My biggest qualm is that, despite its length, not many new ideas get introduced. Its mostly small differences in sounds used for each section. It ends up feeling a bit repetitive and shallow. Overall, not bad, though!

In come the trolls, part II? Heres yet another ranking that will undoubtedly make somebody unhappy!

I think it's safe to say that every ranking at the bottom will make someone unhappy. I mean, if they retired, enough people voted for them four times against (theoretically) progressively better competition.
