That's a difficulty spike for sure. But it's worth getting pass.

Resident Evil 5 is honestly more required for Rev 2 than Rev 1, there's almost no connection. Rev 1 is still on Steam, however, and well worth your time.

Surprised no one has mentioned The Suffering yet. Very, very good action horror game with an excellent emphasis on world building and lore. Atmosphere is pretty top notice, as well. Stay away from the sequel, however. Considerably worse experience, all around.

you can do insane mode with only an non-upgraded plasma cutter in your sleep

If you are okay with dated graphics and engine Cry of Fear is free on steam. It uses a heavily modified goldsource (Half Life 1 and CounterStrike) engine. Do not play on Hard, play on Normal.

@ the evil within, when i say i was bad at it i mean like, i tried the demo but didn't complete it, i think i got through chapter 2 and absolutely struggled the whole way dying over and over at every turn lol

Piece of advice if you plan on playing Cry of Fear, turn the volume low. Like, way low. Around 20% or lower, because the game absolutely loves loud sounds.

that's only REALLY true for that ONE part. you know the one. that game was really good at fucking with me though. probably one of my favorite horror games including games that cost real money

Same. I attempted too. I get obsessed with hanging onto ammo and spend hours on one small part of the game. But I'll end up fucked if I don't. Dudes obviously just trying out a weird flex. It's literally one my favorite genres. It's not from lack of experience

If you have Half-Life 1 then definitely check out They Hunger (first choice) and Heart of Evil (second choice), which are total conversion mods. BrainBread is worth checking out though it's a multiplayer only co-op game (a la Left 4 Dead but better), but it's probably unfortunately long dead now since it was never a super popular mod :( There's a Source version in Early Access but it hasn't received updates in ages and is probably dead too :(

Alan Wake is great ("American Nightmare" is unfortunately not so great), and is way better than some of the RE games and Dead Space titles imo.

System Shock 1 and 2 and BioShock 1 and 2.

Blood: One Unit Whole Blood

Not inherently shooter but Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines is fantastic.

That's typical for The Evil Within. The game is a constant fight and there's a few times you're like "How the fuck do I do this?" but it's doable if you're stubborn. You kinda do get into the groove for a bit until the game throws something new at you.

The sequel isn't like that at all and more accessible.

for some reason i really really loved dead space on the 360 and played it over and over, so each run i just kept challenging myself with harder difficulties or unupgraded weapons, and then next thing i knew i had done insane mode with the base plasma cutter and then was like "well what now"
i guess just keep playing it over and over until you sort of just memorize where every single monster is gonna be coming from
though the asteroid part always gave me trouble, that was the one part that never got easier for me

All right... took advantage of the current steam sale and got RE 5 + 6 for ten bucks. Managed to stumble through the swarming hordes in what I assume is the equivalent of the RE4's village somehow without dying (although i was "dying" several times and generally had no idea what was going on or how I made it).

I'm getting the hang of things I think but I'm not totally clear on how the uppercuts work? I thought they just had to be kind of staggered but sometimes I think they'll be ready so I'll go in for one but get no prompt

otherwise I think it's pretty neat
