Why did nobody tell me about this game before. Sure it's over 20 years old and on the Doom engine, but this is really neat!

I never played Hexen, but I played Hexen II. My favorite weapon was the Seal of the Ovinomancer. It's similar to Hexen's Porkelator, except it turns enemies into sheep.

I'm really enjoying it, does things I didn't know the Doom engine was capable of.

Yeah I heard about Heretic and Hexen, and bought the entire series for like a buck in the recent steam sale. I honestly thought Heretic was okay, but it kinda dragged on towards the end. I didn't even play the expansion. Playing Hexen in GZDoom.

Hexen is one of my favorites of that era. I love how they added scripting and cobbled together moving walls. (Random trivia you don't need to know: all the moving doors and walls in Hexen start out in rooms outside the map boundary and get teleported in place in game. If you use the no clipping cheat to walk through walls, you will see these empty rooms, which younger me thought were super creepy for some reason.)

Yeah in the first room the doors swing open, and I was like "WTF this is the doom, engine, how did they do that??"

sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that likes it, so good to hear someone else enjoying it for a change. there are some tweaks I like to make to the enemies and weapons, but even without that, it's one of the best doom-like games ever.

It's truly a great game though the inventory system is questionable since you have to cycle through them one at a time and there's no way to bind anything to a specific key.

And the worst class the Sorcerer is laughably bad when compared to the other two.

Ahh, Hexen my old flame. That game is great and likes to play tricks on you. If you're playing it on the PS2 slim, then you better look out for a glitch that happens when you go into a level called The Dungeonscause the game will not load if you save your game in that and it won't load the next level when you complete the level. You gotta use God code to bypass the level entirely.

A great game, one that I did not mind re-buying for Steam. (I still have my old PC CD from back in the day.) Fantastic level design. Heretic was good, too, but Hexen dialed it up. Hexen II is all right, especially the soundtrack, but I give the nod to the first Hexen as the best of the trilogy. (Heretic II was a thing, but that was a different kind of game.)

My only beef with Hexen is that during Act 4 you can just up and randomly die. Ya, there is a tell for when the spikes will come up out of the ground - but it's very hard to see most of the time

not sure what you mean. the vanilla wand by itself is basically better than all of the fighter's weapons. (I guess you could say that the wand annihilates anything at long-range, wheras the fighter annihilates anything at close-range.)

the cleric's serpent staff is insanely good, doing very high ranged damage for low mana, and having a vampiric (healing) close-range attack.

I might as well list the changes I make to the game:

Enemies:
  • Ettins: made more deadly but easier to kill (IMO this is the game's biggest flaw; Ettins are so numerous but not dangerous and just time-consuming to kill. they should be slightly dangerous but easy to kill. whoever designed their stats made it so that they wait over a third of a second from the start of their attack before doing any damage *and* also gave them an overly-sized radius so that they start their attack standing super far away from you, so if you move even slightly away in that third of a second, they miss. meanwhile they have 175hp.)
  • Chaos Serpents: more HP (and I give the brown ones a bit more than the green)
  • Dark Bishop: buffed in every way (faster, faster attacks, no stagger, more HP, more damage, more death splash)
  • Centaurs: reduce blue bolt damage slightly
Weapons:
  • Wand (mage): half damage (and even then still kind of OPd)
  • Frost Shards (mage): double damage (could be a little more, but I think it has to be an integer, and the change is from 1 per projectile to 2. 3 per projectile is too much.)
  • Serpent Staff (cleric): reduce damage to 3 per shot instead of 5 (same melee damage)
  • Axe and Hammer (fighter): each cost 1 more mana per attack (otherwise you almost never run out of mana as fighter, even when using both of these constantly. I don't think I ever tried this change though.)
(these aren't necessarily perfect changes and could still probably use some tweaking. been a while since I played through the game like this.)

(oh and I never use the 4th weapons, but they could all definitely benefit from changes too).

Well, to put it another way. It takes... I don't know off hand, like 6 hits with the want to kill a Centaur, which because they raise shields every hit it will take about 20 seconds to kill one. But they're only like 2 hits from the Hammer (math not to scale since it's been a while)

Frost Shards is garbage though, I can't deny it... it does seem to do bonus damage if you are in melee range (no shards), but it's still not much.

yes, the hammer does great damage. the point of the wand being OPd though is that it can take out pretty much any enemy from any distance with little to no effort, for free. other weapons definitely win in terms of DPS, but for the wand being your base weapon, it's way too powerful. (it's not really that it devastates; it's slow and steady reliable damage from any distance, trivializing a lot of situations.)

Okay so far the combat in Hexen 2 is considerably slower and also your melee range is much smaller. Like fighting spiders is annoying, and to hit human enemies you need to be right up in their face, where as in the first game your melee attacks hit surprisingly far. Also everything take a million hits to die and you run through mana shockingly fast.
