So last night I started watching Scorching Ping Pong Girls and it is actually pretty good so far? I like the entire main cast as of now; the matches are intense; and the soundtrack is extremely good. There's still plenty of episodes left for it to wear out its welcome if it can't bring anything new to the table as it goes on, but for now I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Reminds me a bit of Saki so far which I think used to be pretty popular here?

I still havent gotten around to checking a lot of new shows out. I dunno why, but Im not really super excited about most of them. Ill watch Haikyuu and Bofuri, but I dunno what else

We're a month in, so my ranking and stances on the shows have pretty much settled. In order, best to worst, just stuff in still watching:

Eizouken - not much really needs to be said about this one, it's just an absolute joy to experience. Glad to see it caught on in a big way and has established it's popularity.

Smile Down the Runway - big surprise hit of the season. Pacing is fantastic, constantly avoiding annoying story tropes for it's genre, never in a million years would I have expected this show to not only be good, but super exciting to boot.

Railgun: Would have put this below Bofuri before this episode, but MAN am I ever sucked back into the show after today's airing. Railgun manages to knock all of it's pillars out of the park, and I continue to be engrossed in it's twisting narrative and characters, even though I'm surely missing huge chunks of the context having watched nothing outside of this series line.

Bofuri - another surprise, I was totally fine with the fun times of the first episode, and those continue in droves. But we also get great and varied action scenes that actually have me engaged and look great to boot, even if the stark contrast in animation makes it look like other studios got their hands in it, which is likely actually true.

In/Spectre - Brains Base finally bacame a real studio putting out anime people care about again. Still hard to tell exactly what direction this show is gonna go, but now that we're out of the "prologue" and into the meat of it all, seems like this will be a fun show with sone 00's feel.

22/7 - I fear this will just end up as another idol show, but the intrigue is strong so far, and I'm pretty engrossed in seeing where it goes. Characters make great first impressions.

Haikyu - wierd to rank since this is a cool down arc launching after a multi year hiatus and few of this series strengths are on display yet. I don't have any doubt they will once things get rolling, so this rank placement is pretty pointless.

Science Fell in Love - We thankfully have one romantic comedy to tide us until Kaguya returns, and while this isn't anything ground breaking, it takes a unique twist on things with the science angle and keeps a smile on my face throughout. Gonna be some strong contendor in this one for Best Couple this year.

ID: Invaded - all the ingredients are here, it's just not really coming together yet. We're 5 episodes in and it feels like it's only now attempted to actually get a narrative going, though hindsite may be 2020 on this one in the future, who knows. It needs to get itself in gear.

Magia Record - Basically the same feelings I have toward Invaded, but I don't think this is gonna pick up. They nailed everything they needed to nail in the production, there's just no way to make me give a shit about this throwaway mobile game story and oversized one note gacha character cast. I hope the people behind this get recognized for how much successful effort they put into making this source material appear to have even some merit, because if it weren't nailing that it wouldn't be in this position, maybe not even still on the watch list.

Darwin's Game - thought I would have dropped this by now, but it's wacky and dumb enough that I can't pull away. Honestly it's not even bad, it's genuinely decent.

Somali - still a comfy journey with some overt sad themes and fantastic world building, but it's becoming clear that this going to be a drama light story unless things change. Still something in happy to watch, but it's not something that I'm EXCITED to watch.

Oh right Railgun is something I will watch too

The dancing in the Konosuba 2 OP is pretty amusing

So weird watching the OVA where Yunyun is introduced and then her being introduced to everyone again in the 2nd season

Just make this series about Kazuma and the Crimson Demon characters.

Megumin is best girl, but everyone is excellent. They are all necessary for the perfect balance of comedy that puts Konusuba at the top.

You'll be glad to know that the film is a Megumin movie.

At least Magia Record has easily cleared the bar for 'Is this still entertaining even if you're familiar with the source material?'. A bar Babylonia somehow failed to clear despite substantially more hype.

Oh, for sure, as obvious as it's mobile game origins are its still leaps and bounds better than that. It just doesn't have ANY hope of capturing any of the main series magic, even as someone who went in expecting to give it a LOT of leeway. As of right now, my summed up stance is "totally fine, didn't need to be made". Unless it takes a crazy turn, I will not be thinking of Magia Record by the end of next season, other than maybe giving it some technical nods at the end of the year depending on what we get between now and then.

I have been hearing mixed things about Babylonia, though the defenders always seem to fall back on "the fights are really good".

To which my thoughts are....the Ufo stuff has really good fights AND the rest of it is good, so...

Eh the series could drop half the main cast and Id still enjoy it a lot. Megumin is entertaining enough to be 2-3 characters and Im liking Yunyun already too. Also Chomusuke is adorable

I don't get why the Babylonia anime is so weak... They're clearly throwing a lot of talent behind it, but the direction and writing is just so bad. It's crazy how it's so much worse than it is in the game.

I feel like even Apocrypha had more spirit behind it than this, and that was made by A1 too! Felt like it had way more character to it.

Who knows, maybe the people making the call just watched the first episode or something. Could be they were told it would be heavily censored, and didn't realize that didn't meant edited down and actually meant full frontal sex scenes with pixels.

I may not be an Apocrypha fan, but it does have some solid characters in it.

Babylonia...look, the source material may be good for what it is, but it's still a mobile gacha game stuffed with gacha characters designed to be one note fanservice money grabbers you'll empty your wallet for. The writing was on the wall with the two lame as hell FGO OVAs from the last few New Years Eves.

I dunno, even if they did, I don't think it's some controversy that it was pulled down as far as "OMG censorship" , other than then having it in the first place being absurd. This was "extremely ecchi" or "pushing the limits", it IS a hentai. Literally the ONLY difference between this and any other hentai is the were blurring the nips too, which wasn't even the case for every airing.

It's pretty cut and dry that FUNi wasn't paying attention and fucked up by making the deal to begin with. The reason this IS a big deal is because it's FUNi fucking up a business deal and screwing over the distributor (assuming they aren't going to reimburse them for future losses that result from it), and they absolutely deserve to be slammed for that. The only situation where they come out of this justified is if they were actually lied to by the distributor about the contents.

As someone who spent several hundred hours and several hundred dollars on Dokkan Battle, I do not remember it even having one.

Funimation's statement on the Interspecies Reviewers pulling is that they would not be able to continue airing it without actually removing content from the simulcast, and they felt that would be disrespectful to the creators. Seems like a decent enough statement to me, interested to see how people take that.

It's not an issue of it being bad. In fact, from my understanding as a 3rd party, people seem to think it's legitimately entertaining purely on it's humor and characters.

The issue is that, as of the last and apparently next episode, it's an actual hentai, and will only continue to get more explicit.

For that Karma weekly thing the anime Reddit does Bofuri just took the top spot of all of the seasons new shows apparently

I don't know what that means, but Bofuri def deserves to be in the discussion at least.

I think it means of all the episodes that week that Bofuris episode got more upvotes (Karma) than any other new anime. Thats what the karma rankings seem to be from what I can tell, but they also show episode ratings and stuff too. Railgun T had the 3rd or 4th highest rated episode this week, but is low on the karma

Even when I agree with the results, I can't help but think everything about Reddit's structure is stupid.

I dont have an account there or even really understand how Reddit works. It just seems confusing with flairs and all that other shit so Ive never bothered to make one >_>
