Unrestricted Free Agents (AKA Signing Your Remaining Free Agents)

Any player of yours whose contract expired and was not part of the previous event will be included here. This is an extremely straightforward event. You either sign or you do not sign players, Those you do stay on your team, those who don't enter the free agent pool.

When you receive the PM with your slash lines, remember that those are not the deals you have to sign them to. With a few exceptions that I will lay out, you can sign anyone (pending the age/max length rule) to deals 1-7 years in length. If you wish to give a player a custom offer, I might be available to do live signings the new few days. Otherwise, we can bounce PMs off of each other for a while (remember that there is a deadline though and delay in response could be a day or longer). If you wish to offer someone a deal of a different length but do no want to bother with the financials, you can merely say you want to give X player the default deal for Y years.

There are only two wrinkles for this event. One is that a few players might hold out for better deals. I can confirm that two users have a holdout. What happens is that I will isolate them in the PM and tell you their base deal. If you elect not to sign them, they will stay on your team without playing a down for you until you trade them, release them, or give into their contract demands. Keep in mind that any guaranteed money still left on their contract (annual bonus) is transferred over to the new contract.

The second wrinkle is that some players hate your team to where they will only sign via the franchise tag, which is a one year deal that pays them the average of the Top 5 salaries at their position or 120% of what they made last season, whichever is higher. I will isolate those players and also tell you how much money that comes out to as of this moment. The franchise tag has rarely been used, so while I am not expecting anyone will use it, you never know.

For those who don't remember, the age/max length rule is that you can't sign a player to a longer contract if it will take them past their age-34 season. You can however sign a player through their age-34 season if it was already included in their default contract. For example, if a 33-year-old player asks for a 3 year contract, you can sign him to that deal because it was part of the default deal. You cannot sign them to a 4+ year contract though.

Also remember that sign-and-trades are not allowed. Players signed to 1 year contracts are ineligible to be traded (RFAs signed via tenders are exempt from this rule). Players signed to multi-year contracts are ineligible to be traded until Week 9 of the regular season.

Signing Your UFAs Rules

1. I will PM everyone their UFAs and the slash line (length/total/signing bonus) of their desired deal. I will also include and isolate any players who are either holding out or hate your team to where they will only sign with you if you place the franchise tag on them.

2. You will PM me back with the following format (using two players from my team as an example)

Re-signing:
HB Bernard Pierce - 5 / $10.6 mil / $1.80 mil
or
HB Bernard Pierce - 3 year default

Franchise Tag:
Nobody

Not re-signing:
HB Ahmad Bradshaw

The deadline for signing your UFAs will be Saturday, February 29th at 9 PM ET

Heh, my backup FB Pierre Brigham is one of the holdouts. I'd consider playing behind Peyton Hillis an honor. Good luck in that booming FB market, buddy.

Actually, one team had all three holdouts. I copy and pasted the intro from last season, so the two users remark is an error. As the intro states, a holdout is a player currently under contract that will not play until their contract is re-worked. What you are referring to is what I denoted as the second wrinkle. Those are about players not under contract who are unwilling to sign with your team due to morale issues.

User Trade

Jaguars Receive:
FS Tashaun Gipson (85 overall, 28 years old)
Steelers 3rd Round Pick (76th overall)

Steelers Receive:
FS Tre Boston (81 overall, 22 years old)
Jaguars 2nd Round Pick (61st overall)

Gipson was demanding a trade from the Steelers, and they moved him for a younger backup with starting experience who could be the future heir to Corey Campbell. The Steelers also get a slight upgrade in the draft from trading their versatile Pro Bowl safety.

The Jags may get older and more expensive at FS, but at 28 years old, Gipson still has a lot of productive years ahead of him. He also comes with a history of being a playmaker at FS, SS, and slot corner. With a more established player in the secondary, he might help the development of an overall very young secondary.

Both parties demonstrated they knew the financial implications as well as what both sides were looking to get out of the deal. This trade is official.

Looking to move G Andy Christensen (88 - 32yo) for cap reasons. His career stat line for me is 105 Blocks / 27 Sacks (3.89 ratio) primarily as a backup over 6 seasons. He had a bad season last season (21/10), his block ratio prior to last season was 5.5.

He would be on a reasonable deal for his OVR after I eat the dead money (4.4m this season / 5.7m next season) but his production is probably slightly below his OVR (but has been as a backup)

Would mainly be looking for draft compensation / upgrading a pick.

User Trade

Browns receive:
DT Ryan Bain (81 overall, 29 years old)
Dolphins 5th round pick (160th overall)

Bears receive:
QB Ryan Perrilloux (85 overall, 29 years old)

Browns incur a $2.7 mil cap penalty to make an originally $6.34 mil cap hit into $3.43 mil
Bears incur a $1.66 mil cap penalty to make an originally $4.26 mil cap hit into $4.99 mil

The Browns were going to move on from Perrilloux after two straight seasons of poor play throwing the ball. Bringing in Bain allows them to move on from the older and more expensive incumbent Daryl Richard who has routinely been a mediocre pass-rusher.

The Bears would like to to try out a scrambling QB after cycling through four pocket passers in the past two seasons. The move to bring in Perrilloux is a low-cost, low risk one. While he is coming off of the aforementioned two poor seasons and a career full of injuries, the two prior to that were great, one of which included being the starting QB for the SB-winning Broncos.

Both parties demonstrated they were aware of the financial implications, past history of players involved, as well as what both teams were hoping to accomplish.

The trade is official.

WR Lance Leggett (90 overall, 32 y/o) is officially on the trade block.

His cap room is pretty large for me at this point, and I am trying to get younger.

He still has 3 years left on his deal, I am looking for a draft pick or possibly a younger WR + late pick.

Let me know if you have any interest in him.

Thanks!

After discussing QB Jimmy Garoppolo vs LB Shaquil Barrett with you guys two offseasons ago, i wanted to make a tradition where the user with the top pick talks about what they hope to do with it. I forgot to bring this up last season, so if Jukkie wants to talk about what he was thinking back then feel free.

Things are much clearer this time around. Having had a bottom 5 defense for awhile now, that needs to be addressed. After choosing not to re-sign my starting RE of the last four seasons Ryan Riddle, taking an edge rusher here is my goal. A top OLB would also be a major boon to my front 7.

So here's a question for everyone to give an opinion on

Overall talent level of the league as seasons have gone by
A. Higher
B. Lower
C. Same

This is going purely by OVR not production

Feel free to elaborate if you want (I.e. higher/lower at the top end but same at mid/lower end or same at the top but higher/lower at the middle/bottom, etc.). Maybe you want to say by position.

I don't know the answer myself yet (apart from offense) but I have an idea. I only have data from S10 onwards for the record

Since the beginning of the league, it is exceptionally higher as a whole. That's largely due to offense and special teams. Positions like CB and DE have seen drops.

In that case it makes it more interesting that we are currently trending downwards in terms of talent level (at least from S10 onwards). Out of the 8 positions I've done so far 6 are trending downwards, 1 is static (except at the extreme low end where it's down) and 1 is slightly up (OT)

I was super busy last year and forgot to send in my picks, mostly because I thought I was going to be at the draft, then last minute couldn't make it. Long story short, KCF picked for me, and while he was ranked a little lower than the others, it was my most needed position, and a good decision.

So I cannot give to much insight on the pick itself, but I can say, that I was thinking of either trading my pick, or picking the exact same player.

Let's see...when I had the first pick I was ready to move on from Pennington. He might have been a bit expensive too, can't remember. Figured I could either trade him for picks or to an AI team for players. So I went with Kirby Freeman instead of taking the best player on the board in DE Brick Massey who came out of the draft at 90 overall. I don't remember what I did with Pennington after that, maybe i even cut him? And then Freeman went on to be fools gold after jumping to 90 OVR after his first two years.

I am still updating the spreadsheet, but I wanted to get this out now.

I would like to acquire additional draft picks, preferably in rounds 3/4, though I could maybe be interested in the 2nd round. If any team is in a tough financial situation and would not want to waste draft picks or would like to get in the robust free agent class but thinks it might be difficult to sign all their rookies and bid on free agents, I am willing to trade away future draft picks for picks this year.

For example, I would be willing to give up my third next year for a third this year and do late-round swaps to be able to do it in the game.

User Trade!

Bears receive:
Pioneers S14 1st round pick
Pioneers S14 2nd round pick
Pioneers S14 3rd round pick
Pioneers 7th round pick (205th overall)

Pioneers receive:
Bears 1st round pick (7th overall)
Dolphins 3rd round pick (96th overall)
Bears S14 4th round pick
Bears 7th round pick

As previously mentioned, I am in charge of a new team and want players NOW! I have to cap space to absorb everyone, and it won't stop me from still dabbling in free agency if I wish.

The Bears are in a bad spot cap-wise, but they have few holes to fill. They will still be able to fill most of the holes in the draft. More importantly, this gives them a ton of draft capital next season to be flexible in RFA and the draft by having multiple picks in each of the first three rounds.
