Bad Guy, the song with less than two minutes of looped drum machine and a synth bassline, literally nothing else, wins a grammy.

I don't even hate Billie Eilish, it's just... bad guy's terrible. It's the lowest effort song i ever heard in my life. That Everything I Wanted song of hers isn't bad.

There was a controversy. tl:dr Grammy CEO got fired and outed the awards as rigged and filled with corruption. Like the nominees are in the room while the nomination process is happening.

Award shows are nothing more than the opinions of a small group of people. I don't understand why people take award shows as the objectiveness of whether or not something is good or bad. Must be a hivemind thing. What is "controversial" about some people saying they like something. I don't care in the slightest who wins awards at these shows and others shouldn't either

I don't get it. I'd guess it has something to do with feeling validated when your favorite artist or song wins an award. I can't really see why else anyone would care what a group of people they've never met think about music.

Even though I literally never heard any of her music, I'll congratulate for her for winning.

First time I've heard of her was when she went on Hot Ones, and was thoroughly confused to see her playing jam-packed arenas. Damn, I guess this is what the youngsters are into now.

I do not listen to pop music. And I'll be the first to point out that as of the last two decades popular music has increasingly become less and less original, less interesting, more homogeneous, and just fucking vapid trash. And I gave the Billie Eilish record a listen, and then two more, because it's really good. The bass is too loud and it's literally the only album I play without a flat eq.

Also award shows are fucking dumb. Art speaks for itself.

I gave a tl:dr. A lot more stuff was mentioned. That probably deserves its own thread. Taylor Swift was supposed to perform but backed out over the stuff the CEO said happened. Here is an article for those interested that tries to sum it up. I will try quoting a part of it.

https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/art-books-music/a30647659/deborah-dugan-grammys-controversy/

Dugan mentions in her claims that memorable artists such as Beyonc, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and Frank Ocean were snubbed in previous years, and that the biggest awards tend to go to rock, country, and pop artists. She then outlined how the Grammy voting process is allegedly tainted. Submissions for awards are first voted on by the members of the Academy, and then the top 20 entries are reviewed by smaller committees to narrow down the list to the final five to eight nominees for each category, Dugan's file explains. But, according to her complaint, the board uses the committees to promote artists they have relationships with, and "manipulates the nominations process" to include songs that Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich wants performed during the ceremony. The board has even given nominations to submissions that weren't in the top 20 list at all, per the filing. This year, that happened with 30 nominees. When proposals regarding the need for a more inclusive approach to the Grammy Awards were presentedspecifically from Tina Tchen, the former chief of staff for Michelle Obama and head of the Grammy Task Force on Diversity and Inclusionone board member said to Dugan, "this is bullshit," according to the complaint. When asked if the public should view the Grammys as a rigged awards ceremony during an interview on Good Morning America, Dugan responded, Im saying that the system should be transparent and there are instances of conflicts of interest that has tainted the results.

Dugan alleged that former Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnowwho stepped down in 2019 after being widely criticized for telling women to step up to win Grammysraped a foreign recording artist, who is also a member of the Academy, after the artists performance at Carnegie Hall. The woman isnt identified by name, but the lawsuit states that according to the her attorney, a psychiatrist confirmed that the sexual encounter between her and Mr. Portnow was likely not consensual. Dugan said she learned of the rape allegation in May 2019 during a meeting with the Grammys board of directors, which took place before her tenure as chief executive officially began. The news was presented to Ms. Dugan as though the Board had just learned of the allegation, her lawyers said. In reality they were well aware of the allegation at the time Ms. Dugan agreed to take on the CEO position, but never told her.

I'm happy she won but I get why everyone hates her. As a no name artist that sprung to popularity basically overnight I get why people are upset that she won over someone like Lana. But Lana has been in the game for years and as stated previously the Grammy's are nothing but a popularity contest. In terms of popularity, Billie deserved every ounce of it this year. I don't remember the last time I've heard someone so new take over basically everything in that genre of the music scene. Say what you want about her singing style, but she does have some really good songs, even if "Bad Guy" isn't necessarily viewed as good in some lights, its just the one that's popular.

I like the record, but I think "Bad Guy" is the second least interesting song on the album. It's a solid pop tune, but it's the type of simplistic catchiness that gets old quickly for me. Aside from "I Love You" the rest of the album is good and worth multiple listens. "I Love You" doesn't do anything unique or interesting; it just pretends it's not melodically ripping off the far superior, "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen.
