how do you even afford to live for retirement? You need at least $1,300 for rent/mortage and about $500-$600 more for utilities/phone/internet and about $30-$340 a week for food. Even if you save up over $50,000 that's only really enough to stay fed with a roof over your head for about 2 years.

You can have a 401k since the day you turned 18 and still not have enough for retirement.

That's great! Every little bit helps. I doubt it's too late unless you're older. Just make sure you're not doing something dumb like leaving it all in the G fund. I doubt you are, but that's sadly too common.

I think if I work until I'm like 70 and the current system remains which it probably won't by then, I could get a pretty generous annuity before I die from a heart attack two months after retiring

You HAVE to start investing, either in a retirement account like the IRA, and or 401k, stock market, real estate, a business or a combination of 2,3 or all of the above.

Since even with a medium or high wage income just saving what you have left after expenses until retirement age isnt enough. You absolutely have to establish continuous streams of income enough to comfortably cover all your living expenses for the rest of your life.

In regards to mortgage the best case scenario is that your house/car are fully or at the least almost fully paid off by the time you retire to write that off your bills entirely.

A lot of people aren't smart and are lazy. I could have retired years ago if I'd wanted to. I still work. When I finally do retire I'll retire on enough that my damned kids can retire too.

Already halfway there being homeless.

Now comes the part where I grow old and die in this shelter, and I'm not the only one. Over 200 other guys here and at least 2/3s of them have been living here 10+ years (the highest being 27 years).

Once you're at the bottom, you don't get back up.

Yeah. I make about $900 a month working part time, and my fiance doesn't work at all. We're getting by on student loans and scholarships. Ideally I'll wanna start saving big time once I'm out of school by keeping about the same quality of life that we have now for awhile, but at 25 it feels like theres a lot of catching up to do
