i was interested in layton before playing the crossover game, but felt less sure of it afterward. am i right thay it's just not really a story/writing-driven game, and more just w collection of puzzles?

Nah, I'd say it's a story-driven game, but the gameplay revolves around solving puzzles to advance it. The investigation segments of Layton/AA are basically what Layton games are like.

#80. Zero Time Dilemma

My feelings on Zero Time Dilemma arecomplex. There was a lot to live up to as the long-awaited finale to the Zero Escape trilogy that very nearly never happened. I think it lived up to it in a lot of ways and fell short in others. There was probably no way to come up with a plot that would be 100% satisfactory to the fanbase, and so Im willing to be lenient in judging the game in that regard. It answered a lot of my big lingering questions, but there were also points that the game didnt do much of anything with. Im being vague on purpose because I dont want to include any spoilers because this is a game (and a series as a whole) you should go into without knowing anything ahead of time.

The basic premise of Zero Time Dilemma is that there are three teams of three people trapped inside a facility, and they have to solve a lot of puzzles and make a lot of difficult choices that affect not only their own team but the other two teams. Some of the choices were brutal (the image I posted being perhaps the prime example), but you eventually have to play through every permutation to see all the scenes and all the endings. I always make the choice I would personally make first, and then go back and do the other ones afterwards once Ive hit a dead end. Its one of those games where you want to see every version of every event, even when it leads to a bad ending or a dead end. And even when you hit a dead end, youre eager to find the missing piece that opens the way to the next series of events. Its satisfying seeing all the routes almost create a cascade effect as plot bombs start going off.

Anyway, each team was pretty balanced, and the characters played off of each other well. They each served their own function. When you just wanted answers to the mysteries, Team Q was usually the way to go. When you wanted some emotional drama, that was Team Ds department. When you just wanted straight up crazy, you couldnt go wrong with Team C. I liked most of the characters, although I wasnt a huge fan of Eric. Carlos was probably the new character who impressed me the most. Id say Team D was my favorite overall, but I loved Sigma and Phi from Virtues Last Reward, and Diana is very similar to another character from that game.

Zero Time Dilemma is probably the most divisive game of the three, and as such, perhaps the least popular among them. I suppose it boils down to what you were expecting and what you wanted from this game. As I said before, it was probably impossible to make a game that would leave everyone feeling completely satisfied with how the story wrapped up. As for me, I didnt get everything I wanted, but I got enough out of it to say I really enjoyed the experience.

Math is good and fun!
The worst puzzles are the sliding blocks, ugh. Some of those take like 80 moves even for an optimal solution!

Loooooove that ZTD image. I go back and forth on whether I prefer ZTD or VLR, and I enjoyed both of them quite a bit more than 999.

#79. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Its rather fitting that were approaching our second Game of the Decade contest as I write this because the only reason I ended up playing Majoras Mask to completion was that it won the first contest. I did the same for Ocarina of Time after it won in 2009, so I suppose I ought to play Undertale at some point (as well as the winner of GOTD2 if by some miracle it isnt Breath of the Wild!) to make things fair! Anyway, I actually got Majoras Mask shortly after it originally came out back in 2000 because the previews and ads for it made it look really cool. I played it for maybe an hour, and I absolutely hated the three-day system (I tend to hate time limits in games in general), so I dropped it and didnt touch it again for another decade. However, I was determined to finish it on my second attempt, no matter what.

And boy, am I glad I did! Once you learn to get around the annoyances of the three-day limit (primarily the song that slows down time), Majoras Mask becomes really interesting. Clock Town is a fascinating hodgepodge of events, sidequests, and strangely endearing NPCs, and trying to memorize which character is where at what time over the three-day period is an oddly compelling challenge. The concept that rewinding time completely undoes everything Link has accomplished up to that point (except for certain key items, because otherwise it would be nearly impossible to actually beat the game) was a really intriguing twist on the time travel formula. In my mind, I created a pragmatic Link who takes advantage of the situation to get the thing he needs, and then he rewinds time without a care in the world for the consequences or for bringing back the plight of the people that he just saved them from. After all, hell just rewind time again anyway!

I dont remember the individual dungeons very well. The main things I remember are accidentally sequence breaking in Snowhead Temple and getting frustrated with Great Bay Temple because it was the only one I couldnt beat the first time without having to rewind time. To me, the main appeal of Majoras Mask was the Bombers Notebook. I got addicted to filling it out and completing every quest in that thing. Fittingly enough, the Anju/Kafei sidequest was the last one I did, and that one stirred me up way more than I thought a Zelda game could. In fact, I refused to rewind time after completing it and went straight into the endgame because in my head canon, Links cold heart was melted, and he refused to undo the good he had accomplished for them.

I think its fairly well-known on Board 8 that Im not a huge Zelda fan, but I enjoyed Majoras Mask primarily because it deviated so much from the traditional formula (in general, I tend to enjoy it when a series takes a risk and breaks from tradition to try something different). To me, it wasnt about the dungeons, the cool gear (and masks, in this case), or anything like that. It was this charming town with its diverse cast of quirky characters, which was the last thing I expected from a Zelda game.

Majora's Mask is so good. Best Zelda until BOTW came out and made the discussion much more difficult.

The 3 day system making it so that ach NPC has their own strict schedule including interactions with other NPCs at certain times and the different permutations that can arise as a result of Link's actions (Anju/Kafei is probably the biggest example, fitting since it's the biggest, depending on what you do a whole range of things can happen. And if you check in at various points that aren't strictly "relevant" you can catch very cool moments like Anju's family trying to convince her to leave with them to the Ranch at night by listening in on the conversation throguh the wall.) and there's all kinds of moments like that. To say nothing of the all-but-confirmed behind the scenes stuff like the Deku butler guy visiting the dead Deku in the credits all but saying out loud that was his son.

And the atmosphere is top notch and both kind of surreal and creepy with the impending doom literally hanging in the air and growing ever closer as time advances.

and elegy of emptiness link is still the stuff of nightmares

#78. Mega Man 10

Not to be confused with Mega Man X! This is the game on the list Ive most recently completed for the first time, so maybe its a bit high because of recency bias, but its still quite good! Ive been talking about Mega Man a lot lately in the SELF topics (</shameless plug>) since I played through the entire Legacy Collection over the past couple weeks. I dont know what got me in the mood to do that, but Im glad I finally got around to playing 9 and 10 a decade late!

Anyway, the basic story behind Mega Man 10 is rather silly. Theres a virus called Roboenza making all the robots who contract it get sick. Perhaps its meant to be a precursor to the Maverick Virus from Mega Man X, but its not like youre playing the game for the story! I just wanted to comment on it because all the cutscenes in the game are kinda cringey as a result. Regardless, the game is a lot of fun, and you have the option of playing as Mega Man or Protoman right away. You can even add Bass to the mix, but hes lame, so who cares. Ive only beaten the whole game as Mega Man. I do love me some Protoman, and I think its great that he has the shield, the slide, and a chargeable Buster. I dont like that he takes way more damage than Mega Man, which I get is part of the tradeoff for having the other bonuses, but still!

I thought one of the coolest things about Mega Man 9 is that they made all the Robot Masters powers viable and usable, not just as a weapon for defeating the bosses, but as a tool to help you complete levels. Well, for some reason, Mega Man 10 goes in the complete opposite direction. I never really found a reason to use their powers outside of boss battles. I suppose its fine because I rarely use anything other than the Buster for most Mega Man games (because, again, its usually all you need), but I was kinda hoping theyd continue the trend since it opened up more strategies. Regardless, the new powers are pretty cool and figuring out how to most effectively use them against the bosses (like putting down ice spikes for Nitro Man to drive over to do more damage than just straight up shooting him with it) was fun.

As far as the new Robot Masters are concerned, I thought it was a pretty good batch! The only lame ones Id say were Chill Man because pretty much every ice robot turns out to be the same (same with fire robots, but they usually at least have cooler designs) and maybe Pump Man. I think Nitro Man and Commando Man were my favorites. Also, I gotta say, as a sports fan, Strike Mans stage might now be my favorite one in the entire Classic series. I thought it was so cool. So yeah, if youre like me, and youre a fan whos been putting off playing Mega Man 9 and 10 for the last decade, go ahead and give them a shot! Theyre well worth it!

#77. WWF No Mercy

Still one of the greatest Guru choices ever! For many people (including me), this is the greatest pro wrestling game ever made. Mind you, I havent bought a wrestling game made in the last decade aside from WWE All-Stars (which is a really fun game!), but that was because of the nostalgia of the wrestlers I grew up with. But No Mercy still has a strong community that mods the game to update the roster to include current wrestlers and even other promotions. What is it about this game thats given it such an enduring legacy?

Just like Revenge came out during the peak of WCW, No Mercy came out during the peak of WWFs Attitude Era, and so it has an amazing roster. It maintains the same basic gameplay as World Tour, Revenge, and Wrestlemania 2000, but its been fine tuned through those iterations and feels as good as its ever felt. Its so accessible because the controls are simple. There arent any complicated move inputs. You just punch, grab, and slam dudes. Its almost a Smash-esque control scheme. It kept the momentum meter that Revenge introduced (now aptly called the Attitude Meter), so matches always feel like theyre up for grabs until you pin the other guy down for the 3 count. It has several championship gauntlets, and its a lot of fun going through them winning and defending each title. You could actually choose different routes through those gauntlets depending on the actions you took, and even whether or not you won the match. Losing didnt automatically knock you out of the gauntlet. No Mercy also added some new modes, most prominently the ladder match.

But perhaps the main draw of No Mercy to many people is its in-depth customization for the Create a Character mode. Im not huge into that sort of thing, but my best friend would spend hours creating wrestler after wrestler (you could save up to 18 created wrestlers at a time). You could even edit and customize the current roster. So if you want to see a huge wrestler suddenly show the agility of a cruiserweight, you can do that! It was fun to mess around with that and give familiar faces a completely different moveset. It opened up so many possibilities because there might be a wrestler you personally like or want to use, but he has some crappy default moves. You can get rid of the ones you dont like and substitute in ones you do like. You can try to keep them consistent with the character or go wild. Its up to you, but its a really cool feature. It gives No Mercy a crazy amount of replay value, so theres no telling how many hours I sunk into this game back in the day.

Shadow of the Colossus, Majora's Mask and Mega Man 10 so good.

My personal favorite of the Colossi is Number 12. Pelagia. I really liked it's design.

Majora's Mask felt a little confusing at first, but once you really get how the game works like how it saves and the whole going back in time thing, it's brilliant and it all comes together.

Bass is fun! He has a dash which also makes him jump far, rapid fire shots where he can have up to 4 bullets on screen at once (and can shoot off Sniper Joes shields off!), can also shoot vertically and diagonally. Treble Boost also makes passing most obstacles too easy. To balance things out, he can't move while shooting and his shots are weak (which all adds up considering he can rapid shot!).

The weapons were about 50/50 in Mega Man 10 compared to Mega Man 9. Mega Man 9 did such a good job in using weapons outside of the boss weaknesses where in Mega Man 10 not so much but they still had their uses!

Thunder Wool sucks.
Commando Bomb had it's use like the Crash Bomb from Mega Man 2 but to do the major damage with the explosion was tricky to do.
Solar Blaze was ok-ish. It's good on enemies that use shields.
Rebound Striker is a potentially fun weapon when you just want to hit something and do trick shots while it bounces around the surface.
Using Chill Spike on the trucks in Nitro Man's stage to freeze one while the other truck crashes into the frozen truck is so fun and satisfying!
Water Shield is no Jewel Satellite (Best Shield Weapon in the series!) from Mega Man 9 but it's a decent shield weapon!
Wheel Cutter is so good as a utility than a weapon. Using it against a wall is faster than climbing up ladders!
Triple Blade was the go to weapon if you want to straight up do damage. Good all around weapon.

Nitro Man was my fave overall design from Mega Man 10. He was the first one I choose to fight and I liked that his stage theme was used for the game's trailer! Loved his overall design and his entrance. Fun fight and using Chill Spike the right way against him was creative!

No Mercy the best!

I remember being extremely lucky to have one of the few carts that didn't have that nasty self erase glitch which caused all your memory to get deleted for whatever reason. They eventually re-release a version of the game where it no longer deletes your save spontaneously but I heard they removed the blood (but they still left in the animation where a wrestler bleeds, weird!)

I also wrote a Super Heavyweight FAQ for the game! It was my first guide and it shows with the grammar and typos. lol...

#76. Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve came out during that golden age when Square could basically do no wrong, and I was willing to buy any game they came out with on blind faith. That faith was usually rewarded, too! I sure do miss those days. I wonder if theres ever another company Ill feel that way about. Anyway, Im not really a survival horror guy (as you can see by their complete absence from this list), so Parasite Eve is normally the type of game I wouldnt play otherwise (I know its not QUITE survival horror, but bear with me here). Now I havent played the game in 20 years, and Ive heard people say that it feels kinda slow and outdated when theyve tried to replay it nowadays, but Im not going to judge it based on that. I do remember liking the fact that you could run around the battlefield waiting for your next turn to pop up. Im not sure if it actually has any impact on the battle, but it was a neat touch!

Parasite Eves strength is its atmosphere. Eve is a truly fearsome villain, and she provides an excellent foil to Aya. She challenges Ayas humanity and her abilities that allow her to go beyond the bounds of it. The sheer power of Eves presence is strong enough to cause anyone too close to her to spontaneously burst into flames, except for Aya for reasons that are explained during the game. I distinctly remember a boss fight in a carriage in Central Park being pulled by two flaming horses, and that was awesome. You also fight a literal T-Rex skeleton in a museum. I thought it was cool that the game took place around a lot of famous New York City landmarks and locations. It added an element of realism to it.

As a protagonist, Aya Brea is both really cool and really hot. Seriously though, in terms of attractively designed video game characters, Aya is near the top of the list for me. She also has a lot of great artwork! One of the worst things about the two sequels (other than them just being bad games) is that they chopped Ayas hair super short because thats just no good. But yeah, shes got a lot of really cool powers, and its fun seeing how powerful she becomes over the course of the game. Its sad that well never get another good Parasite Eve game, but well always have this one!

#75. Mega Man 2

I think the first two Mega Man games put a lot more emphasis on the platforming than on the combat, and I think the series has shifted more toward combat as time has gone along. Unfortunately, the original Mega Man is poorly designed in many ways, but it was their first try, so its understandable. With Mega Man 2, Capcom really seemed to learn from their mistakes and made huge strides in level design, as well as the quality of the boss fights.

Mega Man 2 might have the best set of Robot Masters in the series, too. The only real dud in the bunch of Wood Man, and even hes not THAT bad. He just looks dumb. Youve got a great set of powers, too, headed by the greatest of all time, the Metal Blade. Bubble Lead, Crash Bomber, Time Stopper, and Quick Boomerang are all also really good. The individual stages are pretty solid. They improved the level design tremendously from Mega Man 1, so the platforming here feels satisfying without ever really feeling unfair. Even something like the insta-death beams in Quick Mans stage give you a workaround if you get stuck on them by letting you use the Time Stopper on them. It does feel good when you can actually get through the whole thing naturally though!

Mega Man 2 has a really amazing soundtrack, too. I dont know that theres really a bad song in the bunch, but Flash Man might be my favorite level theme. The title screen song is fantastic, and it might have the single best Wily stage theme in the series (its close between that and Mega Man 7, surprisingly enough!). Speaking of Wily, it might be my favorite Wily fights in the series (strangely enough, again its close between this and 7!), but not just for the fight itself. Theres also the sheer absurdity of Wily apparently transforming into an alien, only for it to be revealed afterwards that hes just hiding in the corner manipulating a hologram. I like how it spins around the room several times after its been exposed before it slowly comes to a stop. As an aside, I like how Mega Mans Classic mode in Smash Ultimate is basically a recreation of Mega Man 2, complete with Dr. Mario and Mewtwo standing in for the last boss fight. That was a really cool homage to the game.

Mega Man 2 really stepped it up compared to part 1. Very prime example on how to make a good sequel to improve upon the first game in every way.

The only point I would dock off of it is the Boobeam Trap (4th WIly Fortress Boss). Awful boss for first time players.
Aside from that, solid game all around.

Shout out to the Air Shooter. It can one shot the mechs the Sniper Joes ride in!

I like that the Japanese title to the game alludes to Dr. Wily's "alien form". Rockman 2: Dr. Wily no Nazo (The Mystery of Dr. Wily/The Secret of Dr. Wily)

Yes. Mega Man's Class Mode route in Smash Ultimate was too good!

2 is the best NES Mega Man and it's pretty inexplicable that Capcom couldn't top it with four other tries

Eh, they changed the focus of the games with future titles, not necessarily for the better.

#74. Super Mario Kart

Ah yes, the Mario spinoff game that started it all. What would the series (or even gaming in general) look like today if this game had never existed? Im always impressed at how consistently popular Mario Kart is from system to system throughout the generations. Its near the top of every Nintendo system in sales, if not at the very top, which is just wild. People never seem to get tired of Mario Kart. As for me, my devotion to the series isnt what it used to be. I didnt like Mario Kart DS at all, and I skipped Mario Kart Wii entirely. I played Mario Kart 7 for a little while, and that was enough. I really enjoyed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, but even that one didnt hold my attention for that long. Part of it is what Ive alluded to before: I just dont have people to play it with anymore.

That certainly was not the case back in the day for Super Mario Kart. My best friend and I played this all the time. Im not sure either one of us ever actually owned it, or if it was just a regular rental. I just know wed blow through the cups in 2-player mode, and then play a bunch on battle mode. I feel like I won more consistently in the cups, and he won more consistently on battle mode, but my memory is kind of fuzzy on that one. I do remember loving the fact that the tracks were so short on Super Mario Kart (as well as the fact that you did 5 laps) that you could lap other racers if you were playing on 50cc. We used to make it a challenge to see if we could lap the entire field, and we occasionally could on some of the Bowsers Castle tracks. The Bowser Castle tracks were my favorite ones. I can still hear the song that plays during those tracks in my head. I also liked the Choco Island and Koopa Beach tracks. They were pretty fun. I remember Rainbow Road being particularly brutal due to the fact that you could go off the edge at any point, as well as the Super Thwomps that automatically spun you out if you hit them.

Anyway, as far as racers go, Ive always been a Luigi guy. Thats just who I like to roll with, even if hes never actually the best character statistically. Ill play and try to win all the Cups with every character in the games with smaller rosters though. A couple of minor quibbles: First, I didnt like how every character basically had a CPU rival in Grand Prix mode, so if you were Luigi, Mario was always the one hot on your trail. Wouldve been cool if they mixed it up a bit more. I also thought it was a little lame that the CPU had access to items that you didnt, like the poison mushroom or the fireball. Those are little things though, like I said. Super Mario Kart is a fun game that Ill still pick up and play a cup or two from time to time. I know it feels dated compared to its successors, but I dont really mind that much. I still have fun with it.

#73. Shadow Hearts

Shadow Hearts is a strange game, and it leans into the strangeness. Yuri Hyuga is first introduced to us as Rude Hero and has the ability to transform into a variety of monsters. Usually the JRPG hero starts off pathetically weak, but Yuri shows off his strength right away, both in battle and in cutscenes. The first town you visit in the game is a village of cannibals possessed by demon cat spirits. The game has sparse (and often so bad its good) voice acting and chooses to use one of those times to have Sea Mama tell you a story where she often says Shloop over and over again. Theres a scene where the villain is maniacally laughing as he tries to make a getaway, and he gets hit in the back of the head by some debris and shouts, Doh! The game was released a week before Final Fantasy X, but it looks and feels like it should be a PS1 game.

I say all that, but it actually enhances Shadow Hearts! The atmosphere is what makes this game what it is. Its dark and grim. Theres not a lot of bright optimism and hope in this story. Yuri Hyuga is a fantastic protagonist who doesnt take crap from anyone and is always down for a fight, both physically and verbally. He reminds me a lot of Cloud in that he spends most of the game dealing with his inner demons, except this time its quite literal. They even make it an important gameplay and plot element. Its really well done. I like the Judgment Ring battle system, where each character has a unique ring where a dial spins around and you have to time it just right to hit in certain zones to attack. Theres an area where the attack/spell will be more effective, and its a lot of fun trying to nail the timing of it.

I really like the setting for Shadow Hearts, too. Its set during the World War I era, and you get to visit real locations that were relevant during that time period. You even get to recruit a historical figure into your party at one point, which was really cool. I dont want to go into too much detail for spoiler reasons, obviously, but if youre a fan of JRPGs with a grim atmosphere, a dark sense of humor, and a strong cast with a good villain (I havent even touched on him, but hes hard to talk about without spoilers. Lets just leave it at that), then I cant recommend Shadow Hearts more highly. It's a very obscure game (as evidenced by its contest showings) that deserves some more recognition and love. One of these days I even hope to make user SaveEstelle finish this game! He made it to the final dungeon and stopped just short for whatever the reason.
