For every streamer with a $1,000 donation, there are hundreds (or thousands) of people who spent $1,000+ on a decent streaming pc and never got a single viewer.

I remember back when I used to watch Etika streams, I thought it was crazy how he was getting a flow of $500+ donations constantly, at the end of most streams, he would be like $5000 richer.

Most streamers stipulate that refunds/charge backs are not allowed and a lot only accept donations through PayPal and good look getting PayPal to do anything

I sometimes see people who give hundreds of dollars or the equivalent in gifted subscriptions nearly every day a streamer is live. Even if that person is loaded that is such a monumental waste of money. Like are they addicted to being recognized by the streamer/chat as some big spender?

Well that can be a part of it.

Also can be a way to grow a community.

I've been gifted a sub in channel, went back because of the sub, and became a regular viewer of the stream.

There can also be the element of feeling good about doing it.

I've seen a couple of streamers get ludicrous donations like that and their reactions generally confuse me. It's all "woah that's incredible, thank you so much." To me the natural reaction to such a donation would be "that's too much, I can't accept that." Who knows if thats a kid using their parents' credit card without understanding, or someone who is unable to handle money properly putting themselves in a bad situation.

This is why Northernlion doesn't accept straight donations.

I've seen a few streamers get uncomfortable with huge donations and do that before. They thank them for the donation and then say something like "if you sober up in the morning or change your mind, please let me know and I can let you have this back."

can't say I've ever seen that specifically said but I think the biggest (cash) donation I've ever seen might've been like $500

the biggest cheers I've seen in a single stream from a single user is like 200,000 bits (straight $2,000 + like $520 to Twitch/Amazon if you're buying 10K bits at a time, plus you can't charge back bits so that's legit $2,500+ spent).

I think I'd like to get into it as a hobby but I kinda agree as a full time job. You see it all the time actually, not just streamers but youtubers too, who get burnt out because they want to play something different but would take too high of a hit to their income to do it. There are other content creators who have a following that watch anything though, such as Ray formerly from Achievement Hunter. So it's definitely possible.

You really don't have to follow trends. I've seen streamers make decent livings doing their own things.

Actually if you're not an already established streamer, chasing a trend is just gonna lump you together with a bunch of other no-name channels trying to break out while not doing anything deserving of breaking out.

I've heard of minimum donations, never heard of maximum donations

according to a streamer i watch, they've never seen an option for a max dono.

also you can set minimum donations for an alert to appear, but still accept smaller donations that won't show on stream

yeah but you have to spend $7 to get 500 bits(if you're only gunning for exactly 500) unless you grinding out ad bits.

You can't. I'd want a MAX LIMIT because there's sometimes scammers that try to "accidentally" donate a lot of money, then demand a refund. Also taxes and not wanting to deal with too many fees.

This.

For me personally, streaming has been a fun hobby, but not one that makes money. I average about 20 viewers a stream and have almost 1800 followers, but even still, I haven't recouped the cost of my equipment.

You don't make money streaming until you get into the 500+ viewer range and stream almost every day. If you miss a week, you will see a drop of about 100 viewers per stream on average at that level. A month and you've lost your entire base and pretty much have to start over.

Also, it is extremely demanding mentally. It will wear you out.

It's not just playing a game. It's playing the game, maintaining an entertaining conversation with the viewers, and reading the chat.
The middle one is impossible for most people since most people arent interesting enough to entertain

Streaming can be fun but, it wears down. A majority of people will never be a big streamer or make money. A majority of those streamers have what we called personality that attracts people. Anyways, you need to spend all day streaming and going on vacations/breaks tend to harm your channel. Also, no privacy.

Do the thots stream longer? I notice in my recommended bar it'll have someone like Amouranth. I visited her page the other day and said she had been streaming for over 15 hours. Looking at her recent videos, that isn't that uncommon. She looked like she had been streaming for 15 hours as her eyes were glassy and she just sort of sat there humming. Do they really make that much money off it?
