For me, it would have been Link to the Past
Second would have been Awakening, and 3rd would be the original. I dont remember if I played 2 as a kid or not, so most likely played OoT as the 4th one.

Probably the original, but I could never get very far in it.

The first one I finished was probably Phantom Hourglass.

Weirdly enough, Zelda II which is why I have a soft spot for it. I didn't have an NES as a kid (parents kept saying it was too expensive... then they bought me an SNES when it was pretty new, go figure), so I was at the mercy of whatever games my friends and family had. My older cousin had Zelda II when I was visiting and he let me take a crack at it. Not too long after my best friend who lived down the street from me got the original game and we played the hell out of that. I never got all that far though.

Zelda 2. One of the first RPG/ish games I'd ever played. I never owned it though and could only play it at my mom's friend's house.

Second was Link to the Past which was mind-blowing in comparison.

I saw Zelda 1 for the first time at a "friend's" house but he wouldn't let me even try it so didn't get to play it.

I played and beat Link's Awakening once an exceedingly long time ago when I had a super game boy

next I guess was OoT, which was pretty great at the time but aged poorly IMO (I agree with most of what egoraptor had to say about it)

next would be Majora's Mask which I never really liked but want to try again some day

then I eventually did get to play Zelda 1

and lastly, I played all the way through Wind Waker and thought it was ok but not as good as it could have been

and then tried Twilight Princess and was pretty bored by midway or so, so gave up on it

haven't had much interest in the series since then

The first one I owned was Zelda II/Adventure of Link, but I forget whether or not I played the original Legend of Zelda first.

I definitely played both before Link to the Past came out, though. And then afterwards I basically lost interest in the franchise forever.

It was never really a bad game, people were just pissed because it was so different from the original (the same reason why so many people shit on Chrono Cross over Chrono Trigger). But it's pretty good in its own way (and I'd be tempted to say the same thing about it that I saw about CT/CC, which is that the sequel is better than the original no matter how many people refuse to accept it).

I feel like the hate is retroactive. At the time I didn't recall kids complaining about Zelda II being different because like, every sequel was different here at the time, ie, SMB2 and Castlevania II. It wasn't until ALttP went back to the original formula that people seemed to start shitting on II from what I saw

The one for Nintendo. And I sucked at it. I don't think I ever actually beat it on my own. Made it to Ganon, but don't remember beating him, unless I just blocked it out of my memory. I think I remember a friend beating it, tho.

I've played every Zelda game ever made except for Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda (NES, never beat it) <-- first one
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB, never beat it, but got to the final boss)
The Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time (Master Quest) (Only up until the first town, I didn't like it)
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (I only played the first day(?), also didn't like it)

The only game I really liked was Link's Awakening

Zelda II, I remember I actually got it at Chuck-E-Cheese or Putt-Putt (can't remember which) by redeeming tickets to pick it up at the counter. I saw it behind the counter and between my parents and I we managed to play enough games to pool tickets together to get it. I don't remember how much we spent in tokens that night but I imagine it was way more then the game was actually worth.

I like the game, but oddly enough I only beat it once. Every time after that I could never find the lost child and could never get past that part.
