Depends what you mean by best...

I would personally go with any hardtype version, but unfortunately they're poorly ported... I didn't care for the 3DS version due to how SLOW the thing plays (poor framerates and scene planning).

So, weirdly, I'm force to go with the original EZ MODO SNES version... but then again, I haven't played the PSP versions so it has a good chance of being the best one

I have played every version of the game except the 3-D remake for DS, and I give the edge to the PSP version, since it includes After Years and Interlude if you enjoy the original game.

FFIV Advance
Hardtype(?) with extra content and fixed bugs (with even more new bugs). PSP version is probably good too but never played it. Steam version is the DS version which is absolutely horrible and I would not recommend it as all of the charm is removed.

Game has one of the best Cids tbh.

I may just be delusional. It's been like 15 years since I've played FFIV.

I'm partial to the PSP version myself since it also includes Interlude and The After Years. It has all the bonus stuff from the GBA version, and added some new cutscenes.

I'd say the second best version would be the GBA one, but only if you can find the European version since that one is based on the second japanese release of the game which had a lot of bugs and glitches fixed.

SNES cus it's the original and it's really charming. GBA is technically a better version, I guess, but they somehow fucking broke the ATB system, and I have NO idea how they managed to do that.

Randomizer?

It puts characters and key items and bosses in random locations to give a unique experience.

I highly recommend checking out the FF1 and Legend of Zelda 1 and Link to the Past randomizers as well, lots of videos on YouTube

The DS one is the most challenging version. And it's the only one with any character customization due to augments. I guess I'm the only one here who liked it, but I found the SNES version to be terribly boring.

The DS version does have additional challenge, since the port was done by the same folks who did the DS version of Final Fantasy III, but it also has additional content that did not make it into the "Complete" version on PSP. Which is irritating, but Square Enix in general is irritating.

I liked the concept of augments, until you learn that there's a very specific pattern you have to do across 3 playthroughs to 100% it... that kinda shit is unbearable
