And more importantly, why are these clueless idiots allowed to call me during work hours and waste my time with the absolute most trivial shit and take up 2 hours of my time for something that would take anyone else 2 seconds, and shouldnt ever have called me to begin with

Blame those who keep lowering standards on who is acceptable in what position.

The fact that that you have such garbage workers wasting your time speaks volumes of your companies hiring standards.

All those who waste your time should be fired, but they're kept around for some reason.

Be it nepotism, Political Correctness, Quota filling, etc.

Im not talking about advanced stuff, just the basics like how to open excel or how to sign into the computer...

There is a IT guy at my job that seems to just hook up LAN cables, routers, splitters and converters.

Seen him set up the cameras and have them play on the computer screen, which seemed like something I could have done, but others don't seem to know how to open the video program the cameras are set too.

Have never seen him code anything.

IT generally doesn't do coding, they do software/hardware support. You call a dev team if you want a piece of software built, you call IT if you want a router installed, a printer on the network, or a firewall port opened.

If you can't do the basics of excel, you have no business using a PC, much less being employed there.

Go learn how to use Excel properly before being hired.

Only a few IT folks are coders, those are rare.

Most IT folks just take care of hardware / software setup and standardization along with patch updates.

When I left my old job, I had to train my replacement that was sent by a temp agency. Her resume claimed "proficient in Microsoft Office."

I had to explain to her what "saving" was. And how to do it. Three times. We sent her home at lunch and contacted the temp agency to let them know she had lied on her resume and she shouldn't be sent out for any other computer-related jobs.

A lot of people who work in offices don't know excel, trust me.

To be fair I'm just getting to learn pivot tables. I'm sure it's all very easy but I've never needed it. Office jobs like operations never require much more than following directions.

If you're talking about being a Electrician, sure.

But just running CAT Networking Cables isn't hard and just requires gumption, knowing where everything goes, and the ability to climb into small places and run wiring.

Also knowing how to wire everything into the appropriate RJ-45 jack and crimping isn't hard.

Same with setting up local area networks.

If you can literally write Power Shell scripts, this local area networking / cabling setup should be easy peasy for you.

Literally one weekend of reading on wikipedia and some messing around and you can figure it all out.

I'm less concerned about people being automatically capable in computers. Needing to operate computers at work is damn near inevitable now, and not everyone still in the workforce is prepared for that.

More importantly is whether they're willing to learn and how fast they can do it. A trainable employee with not that much starting knowledge is infinitely more valuable than an untrainable employee with that knowledge.

Setting up a LAN should be something you already can do in your skill set, Wireless or Wired.

Same with understanding basic Networking 101 along with TCP/IP and how the internet is setup via IPv4 protocol.

This is very basic stuff that won't take you more than a weekend to understand.

How did you setup your LAN at home?

Or for members of your extended family?

That should be easy peasy.

The differences between that and at work is scale and what wired / wireless solutions you may choose to implement.
