Basically how Unleashed, Colors, Generations, and Forces play out. Mix of 3D/2D, "boosting" is a huge part of traversal and results in lots of straight lines, just dodging obstacles and making split second reactions.

It is pretty much just boosting straight ahead, and a little bit of sideways movement. Kinda like a racing game, but not as fun.

In SA1 and 2 you had stupid parts where you had to come to a stop to hit a switch or do precision platforming, which are completely gone in Generations and etc, and this irritates people who evidently missed that the whole point of the series is going fast.

Basically it's like if they took the stupid forced stealth sections out of a popular FPS series and fans were butthurt because it was different.

Sonic games have never been about just going fast, nor does going fast make a game good. You can't just go fast in many levels in the old games. Also there are parts of the Sonic Adventure games where you do go fast.

The important thing is good level design.

Usually in the older games going fast was a reward for understanding the level and reacting appropriately.

The modern games just give you top speed at the press of a single button. Most enemies become completely pointless and a nonthreat.
