And from mine theyre exactly the same, if not better because theyre not entitled or expecting tips at all.

So were at a stalemate on our anecdotes.

For the 27th time, most other countries dont have tips and have good service simply because its their job. And they can simply pay employees who work busier shifts more money per hour, no different than those who work overnight shifts.

Set prices, even if more expensive, is better than me being forced to donate to their charity or im considered a selfish asshole.

Why are you throwing around douchy condescending terms like charity and bribing?

Maybe you should evaluate why you have such a problem with working class people trying to pay rent and put food on the table. Cause you're coming off as a pretty terrible person right now.

Well, I base my experiences off of the US, Japan, SK, and Singapore, the four countries I've lived in, and of those four the US easily has the worst service, and is also the only country that even allows tips. In Japan, they'll chase you down if you leave a tip, and if they can't catch you, then they'll leave your tip at the police for you to claim it. I've been living in the US since last August, and the service really isn't even comparable. I tried tipping the mandatory 15% at first, but it just felt so bad tipping for service poorer than I'm used to, so I've stopped tipping in the past month or so. My American friends tell me they'll spit in my food if I ever return (yeah, that really makes me want to tip them), but I don't think I've ever been to the same American restaurant twice except for a nearby Starbucks.

This is another reason why our tipping culture is toxic. This shit, this shit right here? Encouraged. People are encouraged to fucking tamper with other people's food just because they don't tip. Or don't tip "Enough"(What arbitrary % did you give them again?).

You don't fuck with people's food. That's not just criminal, it just isn't right

Waitstaff get full minimum wage if they don't make enough tips in a night to cover the difference. That never happens though because waitstaff make far more from tips than they would minimum wage. How are you an amazing person for wanting them all to take a pay decrease?

Sounds to me like they know theyre secretly overpaid with tips and thus want to keep that system in place.

I want them to make fair wages relative to the work they do, no different than any other job.

Basically Americans are entitled and need to be bribed to do their jobs instead of just doing them, we need to adjust to this unique culture!

The attitude and tone of 95% of what you've said here suggest otherwise

The vast majority of the service industry doesnt want tipping to go away. Like I said earlier, it's one of the few jobs left in the US you can get with little to no experiance and get by on a decent living. And they dont really care about your philosophy on tipping. They just want to pay their bills, feed their kids and maybe have a little left over for some creature comforts in this life.

So if you really do have the good intentions for their interest you claim to, leave it be. They dont want what you're selling

I want them to be paid fairly, not overpaid for simply doing their job. The reason waitresses dont want tipping to go away is because they know they secretly make more in tips than they deserve for the work they do. Theyll be exposed if they were paid like any other job. And if theyll do their job poorly or have an attitude if my tip isnt their personal standard of acceptable, THEY are a shitty person and dont deserve it anyway.

And your whole they just want to pay their bills and feed their kids shtick is their employers responsibility, not mine. Giving them extra money for no reason besides sympathy is exactly what I said, a fucking charity, only worse because its forced upon me or theyll give me shitty service, I literally need to choose bribery or blackmail.

Its a broken system based on a shitty, entitled culture that exists for NO reason besides giving restaurant owners higher profits and should be changed to be the same as the rest of the world that pulls it off simply because its their job.

And there's the truth of it. So how about you drop the bull shit facade of "I just want these people to be paid fairly". You're not an amazing person, which isnt exacly surprising since "I'm an amazing person" is a sentence only a total ass clown would actually say

Nice try though

I was in it for 5 years actually, and I did my job well simply because it was my fucking job. My job wasnt based on tips, people gave me them simply out of willing appreciation. As it should be

I can say waiters/waitresses every time if you prefer for the sake of eliminating sexism.

If we eliminate tipping and waitress wages are comparable to existing non-tipped food service jobs (countless existing restaurants), and those wages arent livable, perhaps thats a clue that being a waitress isnt meant to be a lifelong career?

I can make an arguement that 99% of people dont deserve to make as much money as they do, and it gets easier the more money they make. But you for some reason want to pluck a low wage labor job to call out. Who makes you the authority to say how much a person does or doesnt deserve to make?

Markets dictate wages, not your useless opinions on occupations you have little to no understanding of. Theres only three reasons to be virulently against tipping, you can't afford it, you just don't want to, or you make minimum wage and for some reason want to be mad at people doing slightly better than you. So don't fluff it up with bullshit guy. Just own it

Do you agree that all restaurants should offer an option of walking up and getting your own food and drinks and not having to tip?

You probably dont, because im right, because most people would choose to get their food themselves because waitresses actually dont do enough work to justify their tips. Were forced to have waitresses do it for us and forced to give them tips or they get fucking revenge on us.

Giving MANDATORY tips to waitresses for simply doing their job is a fucking charity that very few countries do for no reason besides owner profits.

I think the owner of a business can run it however they want to, and if you dont like it as a consumer you're more than welcome to take a fucking walk.

You keep calling servers entitled yet ironically don't see how entitled "you should run your restaurant how I want you to" sounds. You want to order at the counter? Then go to a place that does that genius

I don't think tipping should be mandatory because I have had experiences where the server basically never checked on my group after dropping off our food. I have had to wait 10+ minutes sometimes just for a refill of my beverage which to me is unacceptable. I have done no tip at all in a few situations where service was extremely poor and then left a 1* review on Google.

This is peak CE mentality. Almost every chain sit down restaurant offers carry out. You don't want to tip? Take your food home and eat. Imagine calling a worker entitled when acting so entitled.

tipping should be abolished. it's pretty fucking stupid, i can order a pasta dish and water or tea for 16 and be expected to tip 3, but if i order a nice steak and glass of wine for 50 now i gotta tip 10? even though my waiter or waitress did literally nothing different other than carry out a plate with more expensive food on it? fuck outta here
This.

I only tip $2-3 regardless of the final bill and I usually eat out alone, often times I'm in and out in 40 minutes maximum. Why should they get more because of expensive food?
