My Ryzen 5 3600x, 16GB DDR4-3000, and RTX 2060 with Fallout 4 on max (or as close to as possible), with high res texture packs and ENB, is only capable of producing 70fps at 1440p. Meanwhile, Witcher 2 was constantly over 120FPS, and Doom 2016 constantly goes between 130-165fps, with the median being around 140fps.

I want an M.2 SSD now. My current SSD for games is a paltry Samsung Evo 860 256GB (used to be a boot drive before I bought a 500GB Samsung Evo 960). The prices on them are becoming fairly reasonable, but I'm waiting to see if I can get a Samsung Evo 960 500GB M.2 for around $100 CAD.

Just tried Witcher 3. I managed 70FPS on high settings at 1440p, and 49 on ultra.

I like the plug and play functionality of NMM, so I've been using it. I hear mixed results with MO and MO2, so I've stayed away from it. I don't like Vortex.

Like I said, PS4.

The good orders I can find online are all PC and it doesn't seem to load them quite the same way as some of my positions are locked.

Main in problem is I am running in to that damn 0 kb error, which I managed to work around and pretty much eradicate from skyrim. But it waaay too much trial and error plus work in general.

Haven't been up to it in FO especially as they managed to make the interface even worse somehow.

*looks like not, ...anyway.

You can't accurately judge a game's optimization if you use shit like ENB. That's usually what kills performance and is completely independent of the game's code

MO2 is pretty well supported and good now. NMM I guess is fine if you're used to it. Vortex is just awful, I really don't know what they were thinking with that.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he won't be able to. I have a laymans understanding of it I'll admit and it's been a while since I've tried but ENB's but they're definitely beyond what console modding is currently capable of, amongst the masses anyhow. while ENBs are indicative of the quality of graphical optimization they're not in the same ball park as say, texture packs, modifications to game engine lighting, etc. they either inject or wrap using direct x. as the terms imply, injection changes how the graphical internals of the game and its engine work through direct x typically with a .dll file. wrapper is ENB/software dependent allowing it to play nicer with other software (screen recording, being able to alt+tab, etc.) and be more easily managed.

I've found vortex infiitely better than NMM for helping catch errors, put things in a g ood order and just general instalation/removing myself.

MO2 is fantastic. NMM is no longer being updated in lieu of Vortex, and Vortex doesn't offer anything that MO2 can't already do. You also need to be running FO4Edit to check for conflicts after installing and sorting your mods, if you're not already.

And on the topic of optimization, the gamebryo engine is just garbage. The engine simply cannot handle shadows properly, it seems no matter the rig. I had to turn the distance down to medium on a 2700x and GTX1080, just to maintain a decent framerate in the downtown area. The sooner Bethesda dumps the gamebryo engine, the better. They've been using it since, what, Morrowind? I think it's time for something new.

When I get my M.2 SSD, I'll do a fresh install of Fallout 4 on there and see what it's like without ENB. As far as I'm aware, it's a post-processing tool that uses your VRAM/system RAM to increase your performance with light sources and other graphical settings. All I know is Fallout 4 uses a (currently) 8 year old engine, iterated off of their previous Gamebryo engine, that people constantly shit on for being poorly optimised. *shrugs*

Yeah it's just not optimized at all. Especially with Shadows as was mentioned. For me it's Far Harbor with the Fog that hammers my system. I had a mod that fixed it without sacrificing quality but can't remember what it was sadly.

Thanks to my incessant prodding, I saw that my motherboard was underclocking my RAM. I have 16gb DDR4-3000 RAM, but it was only clocking 2400 using the auto settings. A quick trip to BIOS allowed me to correctly label the RAM speed.

Running another test bench saw my RAM jump 10% from previous benches. That's significant.

Oh god don't use those. They are heavily bloated resource hogs. There are packs on Nexus of higher quality and are optimized.

Would explain why my data folder is literally 92 GB. I thought maybe the official ones would be at least marginally better. Guess I was wrong.

As an aside, I'm reading up further on M.2 drives. I'm wondering why the Intel 660p 1TB is the same price as the Samsung Evo Plus 970 500GB.

I looked on the store page, and didn't see anything that told me the R/W speeds, which is the biggest indicator of underperformance relative to cost. At that cost, a 1TB M.2 for $144 CAD isn't terrible. Not what I want the drive for, though. I want speeds.

The Intel 660p has read/write speeds of 1800MB/s. That's pretty damn low relative to other M.2 drives. Conversely, the Samsung Evo Plus has R/W speeds of 3500/3200.

Heh heh. I installed Fallout 4 on my SSD now. With a baseline reading, I'm getting 140 FPS at "max" settings off of a fresh install. Of course, thanks to Creation Engine and Gamebryo, the game runs in fast forward because of the uncapped frames. Guess I have to set a framerate cap for the game.

Edit: Ok, _now_ I've turned on as many max settings I could from GeForce Experience, and have an uncapped framerate of 88. Let's see how much further I can dump that with load processes in lieu of trying to artificially cap framerates.
