Good point, your student loans are so crippling that you cant buy a house.

Meanwhile I own my house and my car and can afford all of my hobbies and interests with just a high school diploma.

Just returned from a 3 week vacation in the Philippines.

Anyone without a college education that ends up working at McDonalds is because thats as high as their drive and ambition went.

It has nothing to do with a college diploma that may or may not even matter for the job you end up getting.

Ill break down my career history from age 16 to now (30) without any college education.

Fast food restaurant 16-18
Bakery 18-20
Department store 20-22
Mailroom at current company 22-24
Promoted to office position 24-26
Promoted to better office position 26-28
Promoted to even better office position 28-30
Manager now

Simply from working hard, keeping an eye out for new opportunities and always striving to learn everything the position above me knows.

Eh, I technically have a college education, just an Associates Degree so it doesn't really mean anything to anyone, but I've got a pretty nice union job now, one where young kids can come in and make $100k in 5 to 7 years without any college education. There's one dude I know who's like 22, making a good living now while his buddies are probably stuck with huge loans learning about gender studies.

Managers at fast food establishments can actually make a decent living, the people stuck at the drive-thru window are people who usually just bitch about life and make zero effort to improve themselves.

Get a job at a hospital in the transport department or something and then work your way up through training. A lot of places will even pay for your college.

I honestly would have done that if I could do it all over again.

This argument is flawed from both sides.

You don't need a college degree to be successful and you but you also won't necessarily be more successful without a college degree.

The fact is, statistically speaking, that you will make more money (a lot more money) in you lifetime with a college degree than without. This is largely due to the promotion cap you would experience without a degree. More management jobs require a degree than not, so even if you find a decent paying job without a degree, at some point you are likely to hit a ceiling in management until you get at least a Bachelor's.

The problem is that people attribute this fact as a blanket fact that college = more money and uninformed college students use college as a "win" button. Then they become distressed when their college degree alone did not get them a good job.

College is just a tool to help you reach your career goals. Just like trade school can be, or a certificate program, or even a mentor helping you start a business.

Even as a college administrator I am careful telling students that college is their best choice. For many, it isn't.

Whether you go to college or not does not matter.

It depends on how you apply yourself and get training/learning that actually matters.

I have know people on both sides, non degree and degree, suck at the above and go no where in their careers. I have also seen people on both sides, go great places in their careers.

Yeah. If college isn't for you and you don't really have any good guidance there is nothing wrong with just working minimum wage jobs and working your way up. Being a manager at a fast food place can be something good to put on your resume . You're still going to need experience when applying for work. You can still get a good paying job without a college education.

College isnt a big deal. Luck is more important.

I know a family that lived in a very rural area. The father was out hunting one day and after missing a shot he realized that he was sitting on an oil reserve. He sold all of the land and took his family to live on the west coast. Dude is a multi millionaire now. Last I heard his daughter was operating a wildlife refuge on their property and his nephew was trying to break into Hollywood. They're all doing great and none if them have more than a 6th grade education.

Its funny, I was kicked out by my dad at age 19. Worked menial retail job. Saved up for 3 years to buy my first house. I'm on home number 3. Now my networth is over a million. Never did college. I'm fairly certain I'm more successful than a lot of people who went to college and who are most likely in debt.
