It's so stacked this year.

Ford vs. Ferrari (great!)
The Irishman (good though too long, would be made better with some editing)
Jojo Rabbit (not seen it yet)
Marriage Story (think I'll watch this tonight)
Joker (great!)
Little Women (great!)
1917 (outstanding!!!)
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (awesome!!)
Parasite (outstanding!!!)

Compared to last year's joke of a lineup

Green Book (the only one I would call awesome!)
Bohemian Rhapsody (decent)
The Favourite (good)
Black Panther (lol)
BlackKklansman (decent)
Vice (decent)
A Star is Born (good to great)
Roma (great)

Enjoy it, people. 2019 was an excellent year for Oscar films.

People were saying it was the worst Best Picture noms ever last year. I think only a couple had higher than 70% on rotten tomatoes.

I remember being underwhelmed by it last year, and started looking through all the movies of the year thinking they must have left some good things out, but they really didn't. Green Book really was the best movie of 2018 but it didn't have any close competitors at all.

Well Marriage Story was amazing! Honestly I'd like to see Adam Driver take Best Actor over Joaquin Phoenix. He's so good and it's so frustrating to watch.

Looks like I'm going to see Bombshell early tomorrow and then later on, Jojo Rabbit. Reminds me of my film festival days!

i agree that this year is better but i still think there's been lots of snubs, and everything nominated was too safe, predictable and 'stale'

j-lo and luipita should have been nominated for leading actresses on hustlers/us
the farewell should have been nominated for screenplay, supporting actress and potentially best picture
ford v ferrari is a waste of a best picture nom
lupita

and a bunch of other stuff that doesn't reward the smaller but greater films that kinda breaks what we've seen before

It's hilarious to me green book won last year. Like, black Panther took a more complex look at racism than green book did

While this year is prob better overall, I think last year had somewhat more left of field nominations in places. With the exception of jojo rabbit I feel like this year is mostly pretty safe and Oscar baity

How, pray tell, Is Parasite safe and Oscar baity? >_>

I mean just ignore the fact that the term has lost all meaning and just used as a throwaway comment to define literally every movie nominated for an Oscar nowadays.

Good looking out

I don't dislike the film but its a straightforward, not too challenging 6/10 crowd pleaser. The idea that it was the best of the year is absurd. I think people judging it got caught up in the apparent positivity of it.

Yeah I think Yr completely right here. When stuff like the irishman and marriage story isn't getting that overall award buzz then you know there's a bit to go yet on that front. I feel like the level of joker discourse and coverage prob screwed them over a bit though lol

I think there's a not unfounded view that the academy can tend to dish out awards if they feel somebody has been overlooked for a long time so you never know...

Green Book was the best film of 2018. It was immediately apparent to me in the theater watching it, and I was fully confident that it would win.

These aren't the social justice awards, though the nominations might lead you to think they are. They're awards for the best film. Green Book was by far the best out of a very laughable field.

once again they did not even talk to the family of the guy the movie is allegedly about

it was made entirely by white people who know jack shit about the racism black people face

just your typical white feel good film so white people can pretend racism is dead

So basically you just completely misunderstood the point of the movie.

I mean the movie was about coming together and understanding each other despite differences. Respecting one another regardless. Right? It's all about r-e-s-p-e-c-t.

The director flashed his dick to countless people, sometimes on their first meeting.
The main character's son completely ignored Shirley's family when making this movie. Ignoring a black family to make a white savior movie?
Oh and that screenwriting son tweeted anti-Muslim stuff.

And the main issue is they NEVER apologized or came out to apologize until after the movie had been finished and they were promoting it. It wasn't like a "Hey we definitely learned from making this movie about our past mistakes". They never addressed it until after confronted by it. That doesn't sound like they really learned the message they were trying to get out there.

Even moving away from that stuff. It was a weak film. The screenplay was superfluous at best. There was no meat to it. The only thing it had going for it was Viggo and Ali's performances.
