Why don't you snitch?

No nebulous b/s like "YOU GOTTA STAND UP FOR YOUR HOMIES". What is the simplest explanation?

Humans are hardwired to be loyal and care for other members of their close groups like family, friends, and people who share similar characteristics like nationality, locality, culture, language, religion, etc. etc. Obviously how each group or individual is ranked is based on the person ranking them but for example if a close friend or loved one revealed to you that they had a drug problem would you immediately call the police and turn them in for breaking the law or would you ignore that "obligation" to the State and try to get them help without legal consequences?

A person that puts the State/an arbitrary authority figure above their family or friends is someone with deep personal issues or a lack of said connections, and unfortunately that is exactly what modern society has done it's best to bring about.

Now if you're talking about a situation where someone logically should snitch on someone, like someone who has harmed them and who they dislike, then pride and a desire to settle the matter outside of the impersonal discretion of the law is the answer. Personally I just do whatever will cause the most damage to my enemy so I might "snitch" in such a situation.

Because the people to whom I would snitch have done nothing to earn or deserve my loyalty, while the people I would be snitching on have. This seems to be a pretty obvious answer.

I've not come across anyone doing illegal activities that I felt strongly enough about to snitch on someone for. Drugs would never qualify.

Because people who don't mind their own business don't get laid like mad, despite the delusions of grandeur some mouthy sons of bitches believe.

In fact, it usually leads to people hating you, immensely. And violence.

Or, they should just kill the snitch before they snitch. Solves the problem...

Snitchin' is Bitchin'. Not really, it depends on the context. If someone is cheating on someone I'd tell the person. But if someone is connected and doing illicit shit hell no.

Its just a culture thing, I guess. In NYC, it was the norm. Lets say you worked at a jewelry place, and you saw a coworker take something, and then you were questioned if you took it... your response would be something to the extent of, All I know is I didnt take it.

Its funny cause there was this lady who was like 101 or something, and she was asked how did she reach such a high age and she said, Because I mind my business.

Theres usually little to no benefit for you to involve yourself in something. Normally the risks vastly outweigh the reward if any.

You may argue that its the right thing to do but the reality is that its a cruel world out there, and you have to make decisions that protect you first and foremost.

Technically it's admission to a crime, though, which would be admissible in court.

Somebody admitting to it means you witnessed them.

Amusing sarcasm aside, try telling the police that you know someone who's admitted to murdering someone and see if the police just shrug and dismiss it out of hand because verbal admissions don't count.

Admission of a crime to a witness isn't tantamount to immediate conviction, but it's absolutely something that can start an investigation, or add to the preponderance of evidence in court. Granted, the amount of detail you hear and how trustworthy you are as a person will influence how seriously they take your accusation, and the severity of the crime is going to influence how seriously they take the accusation (saying your neighbor admitted to being a serial killer with corpses in the basement is going to draw more attention than saying your neighbor admitted to stealing pens from work), but it's absolutely something that can (and has) played a role in getting criminals convicted.

It's also worth noting that, if someone tells you they killed someone, and it can be proven that you both believe them (or have tangible evidence that they're telling the truth), and don't report them in some way, you yourself can be charged as an accessory after the fact.
