It's honestly insane that Parasite is South Korea's first nomination in Best International Film. We're part of a sub-culture that's ten+ years ahead of the mainstream when it comes to basically anything Asian. I haven't seen Parasite yet, but I love Burning and Peppermint Candy (and Oasis).
I've been meaning to check out more pre-2000s South Korean cinema. It seems to be a major blind spot for most cinephiles and I'm curious as to why. There are a good number of films available on Korean Film Archive's YouTube channel that I'm dying to check out. --- I shall set down in a few lines how upright Maldoror was during his early years, when he lived happy.
