Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey: 'I eat seven meals every week, just dinner'

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey speaks during a press event at CES 2019 on January 9, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When Twitter and Square CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey shared his rigorous wellness routine on a podcast in March, his habit of eating one meal a day, and sometimes going all weekend without eating, raised eyebrows.

At the time, he told podcast host Ben Greenfield that so-called intermittent fasting helps him focus and has been a new dimension.

On Tuesday, there was an update to his controversial fasting habits.

These days, Dorsey eats seven meals every week, just dinner, he told Wired in an interview posted on YouTube, which likely means Dorsey is no longer skipping food on weekends.

According to his previous comments, dinner for Dorsey is a really big meal that consists of protein like fish, chicken or steak, and a lot of greens, including arugula or spinach salad, asparagus or Brussels sprouts. And then, I have mixed berries as a dessert, maybe some dark chocolate, he said in March. (A moderately active man in their early 40s requires an estimated 2,600 calories a day, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.)

Though intermittent fasting in which you eat for a set window of six to eight hours and fast for the remainder has become trendy in Silicon valley and among celebrities like Terry Crews and Jennifer Aniston, there hasnt been enough research on humans to determine whether its sustainable or healthy long term. And experts agree that fasts lasting longer than 12 hours can be dangerous, especially for individuals who have specific health conditions or take certain medications, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Dorsey also told Wired he tries to meditate for two hours every single day.

Dorsey practices an ancient form of meditation called vipassana, which is extremely painful and demanding physical and mental work, he said in 2018.

Vipassana requires that people sit cross-legged for 30 to 45 minutes without moving. [I]nstead of unconsciously reacting to feelings of pain or pleasure, consciously observe that all pain and pleasure arent permanent, and will ultimately pass and dissolve away, Dorsey previously tweeted.

In the past, Dorsey has also talked about alternating 15-minute saunas and three-minute ice baths for an hour, telling Greenfield that the habit has had probably the largest impact just in terms of how I feel but also mental clarity. (Some studies suggest that using a sauna regularly may improve your mood. But more research needs to be done on the effects of switching between extreme cold and heat.)

However Dorsey clarified to Wired: I definitely do not do a sauna and ice bath every day.

Dorsey isnt the only tech billionaire to have eccentric eating habits. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs used to fast for periods of time, and would only eat fruit, nuts, seeds and grains, according to Walter Isaacsons biography, Steve Jobs. And Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates would eat powdered Tang packets in the early days of the company, because he didnt want to take time away from working to eat.

I never thought of that. Would be really easy to only eat dinner if you're shoving adderall xr or vyvanse down ur throat daily.

I don't know why this is newsworthy or interesting to anyone. It's easy to survive on a meal a day. Plenty of people do it. Consider how easy it is to get 2000 calories on a plate.

I went through university like that, although there wasn't really a ubiquitously trendy term for it like "intermittent fasting" or "caveman diet" or anything. It was just called being broke.

I'm not even broke and I do this frequently. Had a healthy choice frozen entree for lunch yesterday and that's all I ate. Granted I'm hungry this morning and ate a granola bar already ....

I did this intermittent fasting thing before it was cool

I was in high school, so it was 15ish years ago. Skipped breakfast cuz ain't nobody got time fo dat. Skipped lunch to work on music cuz aint nobody got time fo dat either. So it was just dinner.

I was pretty thin too but that wasn't my goal lol.

Why do you say that?

People talk about how many meals a day is "healthy" and throw around arbitrary numbers ranging from 1 to 12, but there's really not a lot of good research on this.

Cause a year later, they would be hungry again. Throwing money at a problem wont solve it. You need a self sustaining solution. Which is generally has a smaller price tag than donating millions at the expense of requiring a lot more effort and know how.

I've done 2MAD and OMAD (with no snacks) for months with no issues, sometimes even fasting for 2 days, and I've never had any issues with my health or metabolism. Feeling hungry is not the same as being nutritionally deprived.

As long as the body is getting the nutrients it needs, you can fast for days and survive off of just one meal. The body can use stored fat for energy and can recycle proteins for cellular repair. You don't need to eat carbs to survive, they are nonessential, as the body can also create glucose from proteins and fats, most of which is reserved for the brain. The only things you do need daily are electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium), and the vitamins and trace mineral reserves are replenished with your meals.

It's much healthier, easier and sustainable to live off 2MAD/OMAD and no snacks with nutrient dense foods like eggs, meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds... than it is to be eating and snacking over a bunch of refined carbs multiple times throughout the day, every day. Those empty calories just get added to your waistline if you don't work off the quick energy that carbs provide.
