I like Disney, but them making a movie with same name as a DC character kind of comes across as... well, jerk. Jerky. It's like totally stealing Stargirl DC's thunder, and I liked Stargirl in JLU.

If only Disney used their oracles to find out DC would do a show with the same name.

DC can't sue Marvel for plagiarizing their title because their title character plagiarized Captain America's outfit.

I seriously doubt Disney was even thinking about DC's Stargirl when they made a movie adaptation of a book with an entirely different premise.

And it isn't like Stargirl is the world's most original name.

Also worth noting that while the character Courtney Whitmore predates the book Stargirl by a year, she didn't actually start using the Stargirl code name until after the book came out.

Fun fact, Bill Batson and Courtney Whitmore actually dated for awhile while they were both in the JSA. But given that the rest of the team didn't know that Billy's secret identity was a teenager, he got a lot of weird looks and stern talking tos.

I think Marvel and DC have stolen too many things from one another for any lawsuit to be realistic at this point.

Honestly, DC has personally fucked over Captain Marvel/Shazam too hard to ever be allowed to be mad about Marvel having a Captain Marvel. The whole reason Marvel was even able to snag that name was because DC sued Fawcett Comics into oblivion because they claimed Captain Marvel was copying Superman. Only later did they buy the Fawcett Comics on the cheap and tried to relaunch the character.

Sounds awkward, is it one of them recent comics or the old school kind

That is true to be fair, if DC hadn't acted the way they did Shazam's Captain Marvel wouldn't be so weird with the name

I remember reading the Stargirl novel in high school. Interesting coming-of-age story about noncomformity. I wonder if the show will touch on the darker themes of the book (i.e. rape)

The character has been around for years. And her father starman was around in the 40s.

it seems like the show is part of the DC Universe and is completely unrelated. the movie, though, is based on the book by Jerry Spinelli.

admittedly I read it a long time ago, but I don't remember rape being a part of the story. it also isn't mentioned in the plot summary on wikipedia

That doesn't change the fact that the Disney movie was in development for two years before DC decided to make their show. Again what was Disney supposed to do, look into the future and decide not to make the movie just because DC decides to make a show using a C-lister with the same name?

Oh, I guess I didn't fully read the synopsis of the show.

Regarding the book, I just looked up the summary as well. Strange that it's not mentioned. It could be that I'm completely mixing up that story arc with one from another book I read around that time. I remember reading like 5 books that summer, lol.

The story I'm remembering is a girl that goes to a party and gets raped while drunk by one of the guys at the party, but people think she willingly slept with him so they either start to hate her or just simply ignore her. She then develops a quirky, noncomformist personality as a coping mechanism and in turn, starts to teach others about forgiveness and moving on. I guess I just remembered it as that being Stargirl. But it's entirely possible this was one of the other tween coming-of-age stories that were popular around that time.

This would have been early 2000's. Keep in mind both Billy and her were 16 at that point. It's just that nobody actually knew that Captain Marvel was secretly a teenager, except Courtney.

Hmm yeah that makes sense. Still, CM is physically an adult man so it's all kinds of ick.

What's this? A Jerry Spinelli book I haven't read?

Nickelodeon's Maniac McGee adaptation was god-awful, though. Maybe I'll just look up the book.
