https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10705211/social-media-obsessed-death-durham-sister-tribute/

A HEARTBROKEN sister has told how her social media obsessed teen sibling who took her own life thought she "wasn't good enough unless she was getting likes".

Chloe's mum, Clair, 44, said she blamed social media "a lot for what has happened."
She told the Newcastle Chronicle: "The impact it has, especially on younger people, can be devastating. Social media took over Chloe's life - whether that be Snapchat or Facebook.
"She struggled socially from being at school so she didn't work. Social media was her way of getting through the day. She didn't go out a lot.

Chloe was beautiful, but she didn't see that. She cared so much about how people saw her. She would post a picture on social media and want all her family to like it. If it wasn't good enough she'd remove it."

This is so fucked up tbh, she looks like such a qt that just looking at some of her pictures you would have never thought that she was a hikikimori NEET. I never realized how much validation people got from likes and social media or how it mattered so much to some.

What is with 'Likes' to begin with and who the heck thought it would have been a good idea? Since it was introduced I never felt the need to like peoples shit besides for Youtube which i just use as a way to favorite/bookmark videos for viewing next time (instead of actually favoriting videos).

Sounds like a mental illness exacerbated by social media. People really just need to disconnect every once in a while and go outside

This seems to affect woman a bit more then man since they care alot more what others think of them and social media amplifies this x100. Validation and likes from strangers on Instagram and s**** are not a subtitute for real life people and experiences.

This. Seems like she was hellbent on being the next popular social media celebrity and when she realized she wasn't getting enough attention, let alone some negative criticism, and was just another superficial pretty girl in a sea of them and couldn't show she was extraordinary beyond that, it proved too much for her. The family wants to blame social media, but the fault really lies with her parents and family who didn't teach her better and / or support her well enough, or seek professional help for her if they did and she wasn't listening. I really don't understand how she couldn't have lead a successful life off social media unless she became deluded into thinking she could and should become a online celebrity, because she is pretty much the coveted young white woman.

For me it's not about getting "likes" for what I do but rather NOT getting dislikes on platforms that support them.

It's kinda stupid pointing out the attractiveness of someone that died because it almost implies that the lives of unattractive people don't have as much worth and aren't as tragic losses

My bad g.That's not what I'm implying. I just sucks that a chick barely in college felt the need to do this

Social media, Twitter, tik tok. All of this shit is cancer.

We as a society cant collectively be good enough to deserve these services because we cant NOT be dicks to people behind a screen.

He's probably just reacting to how ironic it is that someone with her level of attractiveness would kill herself for not thinking she's good enough. I expected to click the article and see an incel girl. What I actually saw was a shock.

But this is CE. We have to make people feel bad for every thing they post, so carry on.

Reading the article, that is a big factor in what led to her passing. If she's attractive and can't feel accepted, she'll be at a loss thinking what else is she supposed to do to be validated.

Depression rates are rising across the board; lots of kids are trying to substitute real friendships with online pseudofriendships via Twitch and Youtube streamers. We have a national epidemic on our hands. Society needs to step up to protect our future generations.

Dude, that is very dangerous. You can't wait for something to be socially acceptable before you start talking about it. You'll miss out on opportunities and could very well sabotage yourself that way.

Sounds like the parents should have intervened.

Im not blaming anybody as only the girl chose to take her life but to blame social media when she clearly had mental issues is ridiculous.

The problem isnt really the Likes or Upvote systems

You know who was supposed to help you develop a rational and reasonable perspective on life and the dangers of caring too much about what other people think of you? And if you couldnt figure it out because you have a mental illness, you know who was supposed to steer you toward medication and therapy?

Your parents.

Of course it is much easier to lay all the blame on Facebook or whatever else is an easy target, so we dont have to look at the mirror and feel guilt of any kind.

People especially women need to stop using social media so much, and women need to stop giving a shit about likes on social media.

Its clear that this kinda shit really effects women more then men, the whole concept of making social media so important is a joke in itself.

It's the parents fault.

They aren't keeping proper tabs on their kids, they aren't paying attention to the struggles of their offspring.

Parents always point fingers to teachers, social media, MSM and fuck knows what else. But never do they look at themselves wondering if they fucked up.

It's not about that. It's the fact someone downvoting something you posted basically negates all the upvotes you were getting, at least when it happens to me.

I'll admit I think this way because most platforms that support downvotes are creative platforms where you posted something you made and then people have the gall to tell you "Nah, it sucks."

Also Reddit because they're FUCKING SNOBS.
