Eh...maybe not as good as Episode V.

But still, Rogue One was fantastic. How did we go from this to Solo, which I liked well enough but wasn't nearly this good.

Good characters, sweet space battles, actual weight to everything that happens....it's everything Episode VIII should have been.

probably watching Episode 9 tomorrow

Came in to make a comment about Rogue One actually being the best and was genuinely surprised.

still

tarkin looked like a pretty good video game

like the first scene with him looked pretty perfect, but then the uncanny valley sets in HARD for the rest of the movie

Rogue one was all right. Has that weird, floaty, avengers/furious 7 feel to it, though

It's not all bad

i like that this movie didn't need plot armor for its characters and that it didn't take its time to ease you into each jarring death with forewarning

refreshing

The movie was good, and it was refreshing they put the grittiness of war into Star "Wars"

but its biggest weak points are the characters

who don't really get much development beyond "The big guy" or "the asian guy" etc

so when they all died, it wasn't THAT much of an impact

and the climax of the movie completely rides on the fact that it ends like 5 minutes before Episode 4 starts. I didn't know going in it was gonna be that close to episode 4, and it was welcome, but I feel thats the only reason why it was good.

I know thats oversimplifying it but it feels blatant here

I mean it was pretty obvious they were all going to die before the movie even came out

the best part is getting to see Darth Vader open up a can of Dark Side on the rebels trying to escape at the end

one thing that is odd

the movie ends right before episode 4....but none of these characters are ever mentioned again

it's not a knock against the movie because how much could it do in 2 hours to retcon a movie from the 70s but still odd

also that dad really loves to talk about this probably dead daughter in a top secret message

The first 2/3 of this movie are pointless forgettable filler. The last 1/3 tricks people into liking it. Few movies in my life have held up worse on a re-watch than Rogue One.

There is no amount of money you could pay me to remember the names of any characters introduced in this movie, and I have seen it 3 times. If it came to remembering one of their names or being killed, I would be dead.

Do you remember the character names from Saving Private Ryan? I sure don't, but I've seen it numerous times and I love it. Rogue One is the Star Wars equivalent of that imo.

Didn't like this movie but it was nothing too awful. Mostly just had a problem with so much of this movie being characters standing and delivering dull exposition. The narrative was fine and the action and visuals were really good. Also the characters were bland and the film was poorly edited. I would even say I liked Captain Marvel slightly more.

this is funny because i get into arguments with my friend about furious 7 more often than i'd like to admit

by floaty i probably should have said 'action scenes that are cool but have no dramatic tension'

I liked Rogue One the first time I saw it well enough, but it didn't really hold up on rewatches. Too much is just undeveloped. i don't care about Cassian whatsoever. Why did Jyn even end up caring about the rebellion? Big gun guy didn't get a good final scene. The pilot was completely extraneous. K2SO was great. Monk guy was fun. Saw Gerrara was not developed enough to create a good and memorable character like he could have been.

I came out of this the first time thinking I liked the cast, but with distance and some rewatches I think I actually don't care about any of these people, if I can even remember who they are.

I think ultimately, this is a result of the rush to make this movie alongside TFA so soon after acquiring Star Wars. I think a bit more development time into the script would have gone a long way towards making this a memorable cast.
