This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Makoto: Low Fodder - Could sneak into Mid if enough voters either realize he's Persona 3's protagonist or else mistake him for future Persona protagonists, I guess.

Faris: Low Fodder - Almost certainly more well-liked than Rosa, but it doesn't matter, because she has Amano art in place of the latter's TJF.

Suicune: High Fodder
Morgana: Low Fodder

Minato: Low Fodder. Yeah, I call him Minato still, but that's because P5 Makoto exists. But Yu from P4 is Mid Fodder on a good day and Low Fodder on any other day, and Minato is weaker than him so it's easy.

Faris: Low Fodder. FF5 has never amounted to much on this site.

Suicune: Fodder Line. Gen 2 boxart Pokemon, so it's naturally stronger than anything from a later generation.

Morgana: Low Fodder. I really should go to bed. It's 9 am my time right now and I have something tomorrow morning, so I can never get enough sleep! Seriously, fuck that cat. I like P5 and I wouldn't even vote for him.

Makoto I will give Mid Fodder, because while Persona 3 isn't as popular as 4 or 5, fans of the game tend to absolutely LOVE it and I think most of them will unconditionally vote for its protag. The fact that he appeared in Mii costume form in Smash Ultimate gives a bit of a recognition boost too.

Faris I agree with Low Fodder on. She's in a niche FF game and doesn't have any good pics to use, and I don't see her overcoming that.

Agree with Fodder Line for Suicune. It was the box legendary of Crystal and is a very popular Pokemon - arguably more popular than Lugia.

Morgana I say is Mid Fodder. I think the "go to sleep" thing is more of a meme than a legitimate reason people don't like Morgana. Most people dislike Morgana due to his plot actions around the halfway point of the game, and I can see people who never played up to this point still liking Morgana due to his design and "Looking cool, Joker!" Plus he actually appears alongside Joker in Smash, so he has some recognition outside of the fandom.

Makoto Yuki/Protagonist (Persona 3) - Low fodder

Dragon Quest VIII/Persona 3 pretty much taught me no amount of greater publicity for Persona in general will necessarily be of much benefit to Persona 3 and with how lackluster even Yu's been, I think he'd definitely need that to be working for him to break out of low fodder.

Persona 3 Portable having an alternate female protagonist probably isn't a huge issue but it doesn't exactly help him. Also, not even really have a real name.

Faris Scherwiz (Final Fantasy V) - Low fodder
Suicune (Pokemon) - High fodder

I feel like Crystal version is sorta irrelevant compared to GS. It's sales aren't terrible on their own but they're pretty bad relative to Gold and Silver. The game hit at a bad time in Pokemon's popularity on an outdated console and just didn't do enough to immediately differentiate itself. The reader and critic reviews here are worse than G/S despite the game itself being marginally better. The Thing On The Box of Crystal is probably not going to be on the same tier of strength as The Thing On The Box of Silver or Gold. And HeartGold/SoulSilver means a lot of people playing from 2010 skip right past The Suicune Box game.
