like I said, I downloaded it, installed it

it says "Optimize Game Settings

Get game ready drivers

capture and share gameplay"

but they're all greyed out, they don't do anything

on the top left it says "home" and "Drivers"

they are also greyed out

theres a bunch of icons on the top right

they are also greyed out

the only thing NOT greyed out is "Geforce experience" which is green, on the top

and clicking that doesn't do anything

I mean you are probably going to have to reset it if the driver/windows update didn't fix the problem. It really isn't worth all the time to figure out what exactly is the problem if it isn't a update or heat issue so a fresh install should fix the problem unless it is hardware related. Just save the files you want to keep on a backup drive or USB stick, fresh install windows deleting everything and re download stuff.
I feel like it is worth the effort so I can at least try to prevent it from happening again if I can. or I know for next time

WTF? Why would all of that be grayed out if you have a legit physical 9xx series card.

Where did you buy the PC from? Got a link?

Well its very weird that GeForce experience cannot see/find a driver for your card.

This makes me think it may not be the card that the system says it is. Like possibly it was bought cheap from some china seller on ebay who SAID it was a 960 but it ends up being like a card from 8 years ago.

Pun, you need to log into an account for the GeForce experience thing to help you. What you are explaining is the page where it is telling you to log in.

Where it says
"Optimize Game Settings

Get game ready drivers

capture and share gameplay"

there should be a green log in button to push on the bottom right of the box with the above in it which if you haven't made an account yet you will have to make one. After that and you log in everything should be available to clinck on.

Also as a side note, when you were searching for dxdiag at the start, for future notice when searching things you want to put what you are searching in the the larger bar that was left of where you were searching for it, try it out. At least this is what I'm assuming since I literally spent 15 min even trying to find a way to get a "No results for dxdiag" type result to figure out what you were doing.

Ah yes, i forgot about you having to log into Geforce Experience in order for stuff to work. That makes sense. You can log in with a google account if you have one (who doesnt) or you can make one.

yes, if you ran experience and it updated your game ready driver then it indeed did update your graphics card.

You can confirm by opening Geforce Experience, clicking the drivers tab at the top and by the white check mark it should say Geforce Game Ready Driver, version 441.87 released 1/6/2020

It will also say just above that: You have the latest Geforce Game Ready Driver

Will it freeze outside of games as well or just in games?

Ctrl+Alt+Delete should bring up a screen where you can select "Task Manager" select it. (You can also probably bring it up the same way you got to dxdiag earlier just search Task Manager instead)

it didn't

so I tried it again but I didn't dilly dally. I just went straight for it.

it was on 100% for like 10 minutes

THEN it resetted. It still took like an additional 20 minutes for windows to reupdate

I'm currently using IE. Oh god

RAM is your memory, programs needs space to store transient data theyre working with, and they use RAM to do it. With everything is running properly, when a program stops running, it releases the space.

Your GPU is your graphics card, and in simple terms its a CPU which is used to run things that are displayed on your screen.

Have you run MemTest86 yet?

After you do that, read this (or pull it up on your phone) and do it.

https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-change-the-primary-display-adapter

That will narrow down whether its a RAM or GPU problem, so you know what to replace.

There is a lot of talk about memory here but in my experience freezes are more often caused by the hard drive failing or an overheating issue. I dunno if there's a good widely used memtest for a hard drive I usually just use the onboard one you tend to get to by mashing f12 or whatever on startup but yeah not every PC has this. You can also run chkdsk which will telegraph a failing hard drive and fix it a bit by

Window key + r to bring up run
Type cmd and press enter (same procedure as last time, just cmd instead of dxdiag)
Then in the command prompt type chkdsk /r /f

Finding the results of that requires some more work which I can get into later if needed, but you can just run it and check performance after.

Also get that thing Wang linked in post 25 or so to check temps while gaming.

But yeah memory problems more often will just crash your computer outright rather than freezing, from what I've observed.

The fact he isn't artifacting or blue screening suggests to me he isn't overheating or having a gpu issue. Seems more likely to me and issue with gathering information, as you said from a hard drive, or the memory.

usually if a hard drive is going out it will just be mega mega slow and unresponsive. The fact that its just up and freezing instead of just dragging its ass on and on may suggest a memory issues. Maybe a DIMM is bad or going bad.

I had a similar issue a while back on my previous PC where I could play games normally but some games would immediately cause a freeze/crash of my entire system. The main culprit this was easily replicated on was borderlands 2 and after removing a DIMM to test them one at a time I found that one was bad and with that one out of my system I could play BL2 with ease. Got that replaced and I was good to go.
