So I was bored at work today and happened to be in the back of the warehouse by myself. I took out my knife to cut some boxes up and on a whim decided to try throwing it at some of them. I was very surprised by the penetrative power I could generate just from basic throws and how fun it was. It got me thinking, I carry my knife in the first place for basic self defense but what do I do if the guy runs off after hitting me or realizing he's out matched? I could chase him sure, but wouldn't it be way cooler to get the last laugh by leaving him a souvenir in the form of a blade in his back?

So anyways I just looked up the weapon laws in my state and apparently ninja stars, throwing knives, and ballistic knives are all banned. Keep in mind this is the same state that has no carry or length restrictions on knives, meaning you can walk around with a claymore or a halberd or any type of melee weapon legally in your day to day life. So what are my options for a good portable ranged weapon?

Maybe a charkram? I mean you can't really call it a knife since it has no points right?

^^Good old Indiana, home of corn, high school basketball, and... corn? Yeah the weapon laws here are really relaxed, I can hardly think of anything else that's banned here. Switch blades, brass knuckles, dart guns, nunchaku, basically anything goes here except ninja stars and similar.

I mean, can you even reliably use a throwing weapon?

Those take practice, you can't just expect to be able to throw anything accurately like Agent 47.

You're probably best off with a small crossbow if you insist on something non melee, but how "portable" that is is debatable.

You have the right to bare arms. Carry whatever weapon you want and read off the second amendment if they try to stop you.

Except detachable blades. "It is a Class B misdemeanor for a person to manufacture, possess, display, offer, sell, lend, give away, or purchase any knife with a detachable blade that may be ejected from the handle as a projectile by means of gas, a spring, or any other device contained in the handle of the knife"

I'd go with a Bowie knife (it's legal in your state). It's not a projectile weapon but it can be thrown

If the second amendment allows Billy Joe Bob to walk around with 3 handguns and an ak, Sleeping King here should be able to carry around a detachable blade knife and a throwing star.

I plan on training just like I did with my knife. YouTube has tutorial videos on nearly everything so I'm sure I'll be able to find something. As for a crossbow, if I could a arm mounted one like Guts from Berserk I would consider it.

I'm sure restricted blood flow from wearing t-shirts in cold weather could impact TC's knife-handling abilities, though. :p

Normally it does get pretty cold here but this winter has been great. Around this time last year it was -10 with a -40 windchill, now it's been hovering around 35 and 40.

If you want a ranged weapon, just buy a gun. Otherwise take a legal melee weapon and throw it.

That's not self-defense at that point. Its just murder/assault with a deadly weapon.

Get a nice mini/hand crossbow

Maybe you can get like tranquilizer darts or something for it

Could also probably get away w/ a sling, though it takes a lot of practice to aim properly.

Weighted pens, they are legal, but just as deadly as knives (and you can carry more easily).

They are similar (but a bit smaller) to a Kunai https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunai, and legal everywhere (since it's pretty hard to tell it's a weapon at all).

You can use fountain pens etc as well, but they are not weighted as well, so not very accurate at a distance.

Your best bet is to make your own, but here is one website that sells them https://www.karatemart.com/asian-weapon-pen

Advantage is you can easily have them detachable for travel, so they look just like normal pens, and the sharp triangle that attaches to the end could look like jewlery etc.

*edit* I am not secretly an assassin for hire!

Actually weighted throwing weapons (with the weight on the bladed part), are pretty easy to master, and very accurate. You don't throw the pens for instance like an axe and have it circle in the air, it's a straight throw, and the weight of the blade makes it stay facing forward. This lets you throw them fast/repeatedly without having to factor in distance etc. It's a primary advantage over other throwing weapons in fact, and it allows someone to master throwing them MUCH faster.

Throwing an average knife on the other hand can be quite difficult to master unless you know exactly how far you are from the target and it's not moving etc. In a combat situation you need a well balanced/weighted knife to be highly accurate at any distance on a moving target.

If they surrender, apologize to me, and agree to wait for the police to arrive I might spare them, since they would still be taken care of. If they continue to pose a threat or try to escape justice by fleeing then I would do my best to neutralize them. I mean I hope I never find myself in that sort of situation in the first place but that's honestly how I would act.
