I don't think I've ever had bad service. And I always leave a tip so nobody messes with me if I come back to that restaurant.

The only time I left tips was when in Poland and even then it wasn't much. Nothing todo with the service it's just I'm British.

Never. If the service is bad I'll walk out before ordering.

Always tip at least $10 and go up from there.

I never not tip. If the service is bad, I leave a penny. The thing is, if you don't leave anything, they might just think you forgot. If you leave a penny, it's a clear message that they suck.

If you get your meal for free because their service was so terrible, that is a pretty clear indication that they need a new line of work too

They might. I keep some coins with me normally. Or they might grab one from the car. I keep a little change in my car. And I have seen others do it. So, they may, as well...

One time that I can recall. I was mad because we finished our meal and were waiting for like 20 minutes with no contact to get our checks taken(I had cash, friend had card).

The waitress did apologize, said she assumed we'd both be cash. Even so, we need our change back. I could have gotten somebody to go get her, because I did see a back of house employee wiping tables, so partly my fault but oh well.

Normally I tip well, and certainly small things won't impact it or even things beyond the servers control. But this one annoyed me.

in my adult life thats the only time I can think of.

If service, I leave a tip to reflect that and if it's good I leave a tip to reflect that as well. I worked as a bartender and as a waiter during college so I understand what one goes through doing those jobs because sometimes you have some very rude and snooty people who think you are their personal servant.

She came over and started REEEEEEEE and then threw the quarter against a privacy wall/ledge attached to it and stormed off. Its almost like I was her only table and she wasnt going to go extremely positive with her tips anyways.

Is it just me or does everyone want a tip these days?

The nail salon, the hairdresser, both massage studios I've been to last, restaurants when I've placed a pick up order and the last tow truck driver who helped me out stood around like he was expecting me to whip out a 10 or something

I never don't tip - mainly because wait staff that is so terrible that I refuse to tip them at all deserve to know how much they suck... and not leaving a tip at all just makes them think you're a cheapass or a dummy who forgot to tip.

My standard go-to (which I've only had to do once or twice in like 25 years) is to throw a couple coins on the table as a deliberate "fuck you". It's significant enough to show I didn't "forget" to tip, and so small and insulting it makes it very obvious I wasn't just under-tipping. They're going to know damned well what I thought of their service.

I also never return to that restaurant or whatever ever again. Partly because why would I want to after service that bad? But also partly because I don't really want wait staff to recognize and remember me and feel like they can get revenge by doing nasty things to my food. So that wait staff didn't just cost themselves my tip, they cost their establishment my business forever.

It's not like I'm hugely demanding when I go out, though, and I'm super-forgiving in general. I've had waitresses who screw up orders sincerely apologize because they were tired from working a triple shift, or who've been apologetic for taking too long between visits to my table because the place is really busy, and I'm usually fine with it as long as they make an effort at customer service. But wait staff that is clearly bitter about their job AND ready to take it out on me for absolutely no reason can go fuck themselves.

If they're that dependent on tips to survive, they should probably strive to be good enough at their job that people don't stiff them for shit service.

Getting stiffed because your customers suck is one thing. Getting stiffed because YOU were a standoffish asshole or hopelessly incompetent at your job is very much another.

If they're rushed they may be only able to give you shit service, which is a lot better than none which would get them fired.

Cant speak for them but its all about if they where pleasent enough and they tried. If i see they are busy im not gonna fault them if they dont stop and check on me as often as id like. But the one time I didnt tip it was slow in there and she never came back. Conversely I went into a place once that was dead and left a nice tip just cause I noticed the girl who took my order managed to stay busy doing something the entire time I waited despite me being thr only customer.

This

I can only remember not tipping once. Stopped in somewhere with a friend where I ended up waiting almost an hour for my meal despite being the only customers there. They finally brought the plate and it wasn't what I ordered. I never care enough about shitty service to make a big deal out of it, but on top of being hungry asf bitch started giving me attitude on top of that so I went off a little.

Anyways, I almost never go out to eat where I have to tip. Abroad where there isn't a tipping culture, eating out doesn't feel so expensive cause I don't have to think about percents on top of the final bill
