Or is oversaturation in the streaming market set to undo that rationalization?

I guess it depends what you want/are willing to pay for?

All in one packages from providers here tend to be cheaper anyway than a package without cable.

Until cable can reasonably lower their price and start allowing people to pick and choose exactly what they want, streaming services are going to keep winning out

The cheapest cable package is over $80 with no features and almost no channels anyone will watch. I'm paying half that for several services and everyone is happy

You don't have to be subscribed to all streaming services. Subscribe and unsubscribe as needed (or share friends).

There will probably come a point when subscribing to enough streaming services to access all of the content cable can offer will end up being more expensive than cable, but streaming will still have the advantage of letting users choose what to watch, to say nothing of the option of cancelling subscriptions as needed to save money if a given service isn't offering enough to be currently worthwhile. The streaming market will also likely see a collapse when it gets to that point, since there will be too many different services for them all to sustain themselves, but the outcome of that collapse will be a return to having a smaller number of services that each have more content, not a collapse to something worse than cable.

Of course, there's also the very real possibility that streaming services start running commercials and lose that edge that they have over cable, but even then streaming will still have a clear advantage in that you can watch stuff on demand. It's going to take a lot to negate that advantage.

Using over the top services use to be cheaper than going with cable. But since the demand for them went up, so did their price. So today, in 2020, its better to just get a TV package with your local cable provider.

I mean, most of the channels are free to stream online (with comercials) at this point anyway. I watch all the CW shows that way, Emergence (forget what channel), Young Sheldon etc.

My uncle lets me use his netflix account so now I have that for free as well. I am actually not paying for any streaming service at this point.

Eventually i'm gonna pay for another month of Amazon prime though, so I can watch Teen wolf and the new Jack Ryan season (maybe they will have a new Hannah season by then as well!!).

But that is generally how I will do things, pay for a month of service once a year or so, and that is it.

As far as cable, I can't believe how much I was paying a few years ago when I owned my house. It was "just" 120$ or so.....for the first year after we moved here, but then they wanted to up it to $190 lol (that was including internet though). I did not pay that, I cut things etc and got it back down to about $120, but even that was rediculous.

Seriously though I know people (even though I have tried to talk them into stopping) that pay $200 a month for cable/internet and special channels. That is freaking $2400 a year they are shelling out......it's crazy.

Depends on what level of advertisements you want injected into your eyeballs.

But honestly, at this point the only thing cable is good for is PayPerView of programs not available online (such as 4k live boxing or something)

The streaming networks aren't on a contract. Get one streaming service for a couple months then switch to another.

Ive never paid for cable. I dont sit and watch stuff for long enough periods of time to justify it. I usually game for my downtime. When I eat Ill put Netflix on or watch a ten-minute YouTube video.

I paid for cable for several years, and cut the cord completely about a year ago. It's a lot more convenient, but there are times when it's difficult to find a show that JUST aired.
