Eh, not really. Like, I think it's bull shit, but I also think it's bull shit that lawyers have to keep quite on crimes they know about as well.

In what way do you think the justice system reverting child molestation charges is the system not failing?

I didn't word it correctly. What I'm saying is if you think that's bull shit, then you should also think defense lawyers not having to tell police, correction, CAN'T tell police about crimes is also bull shit.

@Zangulus , do you think defense lawyers should be able to narc out their clients?

When they know of an egregious crime like fucking children, then absolutely.

But they legally can't. And as BS as it is, I think confession falls under the same law, as in they can't narc out the people that come to them and confess.

The law is the law, you can't just have the courts pulling exceptions out of their ass to get a conviction.

My friend's family was in JW when she was young. Her whole family was abused (in every way) by the stepfather. Her mother was told by church Elders to be "more submissive" to the stepfather to stop his fits of rage. When my friend and her sister finally named him and the DA brought charges against him, the JW church paid for the stepfather's defense AND acted as character witnesses.

Well that's good to hear. Seems like more often than not the win is awarded to whichever party has more money/resources to throw around, sadly

The fact that there are laws in supposedly civilized places explicitly allowing religions organizations to be above the law and free to condone abusive behavior is disgusting

Overall, most of these exemptions aren't beyond the scope of the same sort of "confidentiality" a lawyer, doctor, therapist, or accountant would have.

Tax-exempt status is what we should be looking at.

Courts can, and have, set precedent to reverse laws because of various reasons.

The "various reasons" always come down to "this law is invalid, because this other law makes it invalid". The courts can't just go "this is a dumb law, so we're scrapping it".

The difference is, most of those are necessary for the job those people do in some way. Lawyers need to maintain confidentiality to ensure people maintain their right to a fair trial. Medical professionals have to maintain privacy because violating it, in addition to just being highly immoral, can also endanger people. Religious institutions though? They just get to be above the law and the freedom to ensure their members can be as abusive as they want without consequence.

Youre really arguing allowing people to get away with raping children means the system hasnt failed?

Not at all. That's your claim. All I said was that courts can't just willy-nilly demand the law change.

That's a good question, maybe Zangulus can explain it to you, they're the one claiming it doesn't matter.
