The word "semi-final" implies the final 4 teams, entries etc of a tournament. A semi final cannot have 3. It must have 4.

No it doesn't, yes it can.

In fact, the history of this site has generally always assumed any given poll or contest can involve more than two competitors (ie, the "final" could be anywhere from 2-5 options), so you're not just wrong, you're about 15 years too late for anyone to care.
