I feel like maybe she was in on the abuse, or knew of it, and allowed the husband. If my SO was abusing my kid, and they were caught this way, I would be happy said party reported it.

The rules are different for each religion. Catholic priests are not allowed to give out what was confessed or they could be automatically excommunicated.

Priest/clergy and penitent is privileged information. Although Oregon is a state where they are mandated reporters, she may have a case unfortunately. In most where there's mandatory reporting, information gained within a confession or conversation is still considered privileged and may be exempted from being reported

Literally zero reason she would sue unless she was in on it

If she was anyone but the mother of the abused, I would totally support her move.

I think she may be embarrassed or something, idk... but still... if this was the way she learned about it then she should be happy.

Are priests and church members mandated reporters? Cause if so that would shield them from all kinds of faults regarding the reporting of abuse on minors.

Catholic priests are not mandated reporters. If you read my post above, you'll see why.

There's 28 states with priests that are mandated reporters. Even then, not everything is allowed to be reported

Correct. I was answering the question about priests to the prior poster. I put that in there to differentiate them from others

it also depends on what country you are from here in australia the seal of the confessional is no longer an excuse to not report sex abuse.

I wouldn't know that. I only try to keep track of our laws. That's something our country should follow along with. The United States believes in protecting the innocent. Unfortunately, many of those who are guilty have more rights than the innocent.

yeah exactly it pisses me off that the guilty who are invariably able to afford good lawyers tend to get away for what they do to the innocent.
