also today's big news of the day is Will Ospreay is booked for Janela's Spring Break 4. So while every other company running Mania weekend is trying to move in on Spring Break's irony/comedy wrestling schtick, Janela went and booked the best wrestler on earth and went totally the other direction. It's an easy booking to come up with but with that one stroke, I'm excited for Mania weekend again

and ONE MORE THING - I said I was gonna do a wrestler of the week and by god, I'm gonna do a list.
Jan 3-9 2020:
5 - Hiromu Takahashi
Returned from a brutal neck injury and 18 months on the shelf, after months of speculation, and looks to have not missed a step. Looking every bit Will Ospreay's equal, assuring us the Junior division is in good hands for years to come as he prepares to resume his legendary feud with Ryu (aka Dragon) Lee

4 - Go Shiozaki
The biggest story of the week outside of NJPW had to be the roaring success of NOAH, who sold out Korakuen Hall running opposite both nights of Wrestle Kingdom. And main eventing both of those shows, in matches that were said to be tremendous (only the 2nd night has aired so far is my understanding) would have been a feather in Go's cap regardless. But he shocked the majority of NOAH fans by defeating young ace in grooming, Kaito Kiyomiya for the GHC Heavyweight Title. Looks like NOAH is having one more Go of it, am i right?

3 - KENTA
a year ago KENTA was wrestling Noam Dar and Cedric Alexander in matches nobody was watching, and he'd been long abandoned as a guy with no personality to make it in WWE. This week, the Tokyo Dome main event ended for the first time in a decade with neither Hiroshi Tanahashi or Kazuchika Okada delivering a rousing go home promo - but with KENTA, sat cross-legged across the new champion's chest, mocking Shibata's classic pose and drawing some of the biggest heat I've ever heard in New Japan. KENTA is going to have a hell of a year, and he already has a hot main event for the double titles coming up in Osaka out of this.

2 - Tetsuya Naito
I waffled on this a little bit, and it's real close between the top 2. If night 1 hadn't happened, Naito is a slam dunk number 1 this week. Finally gets his Tokyo Dome headlining victory over Kazuchika Okada, redeeming his losses from 6 years ago (where, for those who don't know - Naito had won the G1 and challenged Okada for the title, but this was while Nakamura held the IC title and had really elevated that title over his reign, and was defending against Tanahashi who was still incredibly popular in his own right. So NJPW put it to fans to vote on which match main evented - and they put the IC title in the main event, which was seen as a rejection of Naito. It took Naito turning heel and forming LIJ for the audience to embrace him fully, which is how we get to today where Naito is the most popular wrestler in Japan) and 2 years ago, and ends Wrestle Kingdom as the double Heavyweight and IC champions. And he did it in one of the greatest matches I've ever seen, amidst pro wrestling storytelling perfection. The only reason he's not number 1, is that it took two people to have that match, and the other guy had a much better night 1...

1 - Kazuchika Okada
Maybe a lot of people will think of this as Naito's weekend, and there's no doubt it'll be remembered as that for a long time. And, I think there's a good chance this is going to be Naito's year. But my clearest takeaway from this past week of wrestling is that when this decade wraps up, Okada is going to be untouchable as the Greatest of all Time barring a tragedy. The man went and banged out 5 stars or as close as it gets on two consecutive nights, drawing 70,000 people to the Tokyo Dome in two days. He's 32 years old and just hitting his prime. Every one of us who is a wrestling fan today should take pause to be thankful that we are living in the era of Kazuchika Okada. There'll never be another.

As Dave said in the new Observer

Ive seen everyone on big stages who has been considered the all-time best of the last 50 years, whether that be Jack Brisco, Terry Funk, Ric Flair, Mitsuharu Misawa, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kenny Omega, Ibushi, Ospreay, Jumbo Tsuruta, Genichiro Tenryu, Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat or anyone else you want to throw in that mix. Okada right now is a step above every single one of them.

god damn, i was trying to keep the lower spots intentionally shorter but this definitely deserved a mention and slipped my mind. him and ryu lee teaming together for jushin thunder liger's final ever match is obviously a huge deal for both of them, and shows how highly njpw think of both of them.

one of the interesting stories of wrestle kingdom was the amount of young lions you could see around the ring. they're bringing in more guys than ever before and their training is the best in the world, as we see time and time again, and now with 3 dojos around the world feeding talent it's really exciting to think what could be ahead. the LA dojo guys who have shown up in the past year - karl fredericks, clark connors, alex coughlin - are all super impressive and fredericks especially is guaranteed to be a star. so, notable among the new young lions at ringside for wrestle kingdom, was william regal's son, who appears to have begun training there although i'm not sure at which dojo yet.

So... people have said that Tessa is difficult to work with forever, seemingly. So none of this surprises me. There are enough women wrestlers speaking out about this, including the woman that Tessa had done this to who confirms it was true, that I'm willing to buy that Tessa's just not a great person.

Apparently she made that tweet after bullying Renee Michelle at an indy show and getting into a legit fight with her (which... I guess she gets into legit fights semi-frequently according to other tweets?).

What's even crazier is that her big PPV match where she was probably going to become Impact's World Heavyweight Champion is tomorrow. And anyone watching Impact and going to their shows has to be an insider at this point.

Christ, pull her out of the match or the chants will make it a blood bath.

I don't follow Impact, obviously, but isn't it just mostly diehard fans who live on the internet now? Like, saying Hulk Hogan won't get booed I get because it's WWE and they still have casual idiots. But does Impact really have enough people willing to go to their shows that wouldn't know this is going on?

Yeah this is quite simply not something the Impact fanbase is gonna care that much about - certainly not the people in the building.

I mean - this is why she ended up with Impact instead of WWE in the first place. It's well known that she was really prickly back at the beginning.

And for what its worth most of the stories seem to be from back then.

Sami went to LU, so I know of him a little bit. Never interested me. I'm not sure how I'd feel about Tessa being world champion. She's over in Impact, but this might be another of those Sexy Star beats Mil fucking Muertes disasters if they follow through.

Depends on how they book it. I heard she beat Cage (um...the fuck), so that alone has me wondering if it is smoke and mirrors bullshit. Callihan isn't big, just a short stocky nutcase. I can buy that a bit more.

I think the main question with these situations are: is the female talent over enough to justify it, can they bookers craft scenarios where it SEEMS feasible, and does the female talent pass the eye test enough that suspension of disbelief isn't so absurd that people are willing to buy it.

It sounds like Impact has done enough with the first two to make it make sense. Having never seen Tessa, I don't know what physique wise what she offers. She's obviously not Awesome Kong's size, otherwise that'd be a no brainer. Beth Phoenix, Cheerleader Melissa/Mariposa size and poise? I can make it make sense (especially in today's wrestling climate where wrestlers do skew smaller). Anything other than that, then you've have to contrive "always in hardcore/street fight/deathmatches to even get me on this.

The reason I hate the Sexy Star thing is it was a battle royal screwball finish, over the biggest, darkest motherfucker LU had at that point. Then, instead of having a reign, she just dumped it off to Mundo the next week. It sounds to me like Impact have been building Tessa up for a year or more, so I would hope if they do pull the trigger, they commit as, "We built her as our focal point, deal with it." Then I'll give them props for having the balls. Female world champions aren't impossible...just hard to make work.

I'm not trying to make this a "only women THIS BIG should be able to ride the men's only ride," but you see why I'm trying to skirt around it a little.
