I finished Chapter 4 of Professor Layton and the Last Specter. The plot feels like it's a little slow to develop compared to the previous games, which is probably why I'm working through it so slowly thus far.

Dragon Ball Episode 31 complete! According to Funimation, that's the end of season 1! Quite the cliffhanger to end it on if that was really the case!

Violet Evergarden Episode 13 complete! And that's the final episode!

I'm glad they showed that Violet was able to accept that Gilbert is gone, and I'm even gladder that they didn't do a surprise twist where he was alive all along with amnesia or something (although I guess that tease at the end gives you hope that he was still alive and she found him, but I'll live with that). It's better that they showed she has the resolve to live life without him.

So yeah, good show overall! If you like something that tugs at your heartstrings like Clannad does (although it's not as good as Clannad, certainly), it's worth a watch.

Mega Man 8 beated

I thought the gameplay itself was mostly fine. It tried to mix up the formula with setpieces the way the PS Mega Man X games did, which I'm not a huge fan of. I'd rather just have platforming and normal levels. Also, it felt like every mid-boss in this game was super annoying, for whatever the reason. I think the game would have been better off if they just hadn't bothered trying to tell a serious story. They introduced a new character and then barely did anything with him. The voice acting is, well, bad. It makes it hard to take the Robot Masters seriously in particular. I will say that one thing I did like is that they mapped attacking with the Buster and attacking with a special weapon to two different buttons, so you could still use the Buster with a weapon equipped, which I thought was cool. Overall, I don't think the game's great, but I think it at least put forth more of an effort than 5 did.

World of Final Fantasy is like

It stars a pair of Kingdom Hearts siblings

The girl is decent but dear lord I want to smack the boy so far

I like these Final Fantasy love letter areas and I went to Cornelia and met Princess Sarah and I am excited to see Funko!Pop Lightning in particular for some reason

I also enjoy stacking monsters on the siblings' heads it's therapeutic somehow

The dialogue is ranging from occasionally funny (and the monster bios are hilarious) to dire

You know, I can't ever really recommend watching Sword Art Online to anyone in good faith (i am a victim of sunk cost at this point) but damn it may have the most incredible OP songs for a series of this length if you consider the number of them and average them out.

I think SAO is the worst anime I've completed (well, not anymore since they added a bunch of new seasons, but the first 25 episodes were so bad and a waste of a pretty good premise)

Yes, SAO has so many good premise ideas and continues to squander them it's almost mesmerizing.

I will say that my favorite arc was one (in Season 2) in which Kirito (the main character) is basically sidelined to a background character for its duration. Which is... probably not a good sign for a show when it improves dramatically when you bench your MC. However, it looks like this current season may be doing it again so... relative to SAO I might start having expectations again. Alice might be my 2nd or 3rd favorite character behind Yuuki and Sinon (both Season 2 characters, the former being the deuteroagonist in the arc with Kirito sidelined) at this point so we'll see.

But yes, SAO at its worst is just... so bad veering into disgusting. If you got through Season 1 you got a front row seat to that level of awfulness near the end. Unfortunately it isn't an isolated incident. I will say I give some credit to the author for actually apologizing to the VAs for having to act out a scene in Season 3 and seemed to explain some of the decisions behind that scene even being a thing as a result of him being young at the time he wrote the original story and emulating tropes he had read growing up. But yeah.

I feel like I enjoy it more than I *should* and that it gets hate at times when it doesn't really deserve it (I also have a long documented case of easily accepting/adapting/working with what are otherwise absurd in-universe rules and systems so I can roll with some of the more crazy logic and science thrown out at times)... otoh given there are moments where it legitimately earns that level of vitriol I almost can't blame people for just throwing that hate out indiscriminately.

I completely agree with all of this! Mother's Rosario is legitimately great and Yuuki is the best.

But it's literally 40 episodes in and that's just too much of a time commitment to ask of someone given everything that comes before it!
