I think RE4 is too awesome for me to care about the handwaving of Umbrella's fall, since by the time the game gets going real good you forget all about it really. FFDragon 01/10/20 5:22:17 PM #56:	A-Rank: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Resident Evil 1/Director's Cut/Deadly Silence Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Re-rebooting the series, I think 7 did a better job of things than 4 did. Which is weird since 7 detached itself from the core of the mythos (characters/plots) than even 4 did, but it was the atmosphere and spirit that really brought things back in line for me. Also I played the entire thing in VR and it was a delight and I nearly broke my hand several times flailing like a madman. For the first time in a long time, RE went back to a character that has no idea what he's doing and just winging it the entire time. Hand chopped off with a chainsaw? Slap some herb juice on it. Foot cut off with shovel? Herb juice that shit too and keep going! Seriously how was Umbrella not making BILLIONS off the Arklay herbs alone? Anyway, Ethan is a good everyman that carries the show and even though we've now diverted into like cannibal family slash creepy ghost girl slash you want to play a game brand of horror, it's still swung back to horror and that's all I've wanted for a while. Also you can punch a crocodile in the mouth. What I didn't like... Basically the last 30 seconds of the game into Not a Hero. I was SO SURE it wasn't actually Chris, and it made so much sense for it not to be Chris, and then it was just Chris. Not only was it just Chris, but it was just Chris in the SAME "Chris loses his entire team" storyline we've been getting since 1996. And then everything Blue Umbrella is such a letdown that I have to hope RE8 fixes things somehow. Seeing those Umbrella choppers, even the picture of one in the demo, was so hype all for nothing. Rest of the DLCs with Clancy and Joe, fleshing out the cast though? Ace. Great return to form imo. The OG Resident Evil is what really started my love affair with the genre. I wish I still had my longbox with that ridiculous coverart, but alas it's lost to time somewhere. This is B-Horror at its finest, from the cheesy acting to the perfectly timed jumpscares and I just love how this game pretty much invented a genre (sorry Sweet Home, you may have been first, but you didn't make the SPLASH) that has stuck around to this day. And even though the series has started taking itself more seriously over the years, Capcom still gives a nod every once in a while to the true roots of things (Jill's Sandwiches in Dead Rising comes to mind). And while I do think it has been improved upon and REMake is the definitive version, I still think the original has a place - its own place - in the scope of things. And I'm super excited to see what ThREeMake does to push things over the edge. Taking the already solid Mr. X and beefing him up to butthole puckering levels of bloodlust was a great design decision. The first time Nemmy followed me from room to room, I knew all bets were off. And that's what I think this game does best, taking things that were already established and jacking them with steroids to create something fresh (when in reality this thing was super rushed). And I'm a huge fan of the split in the game, taking place both before AND after RE2, as well as putting the final explosive period on the Raccoon City portion of the mythos. Really exploring the city instead of the just the illusion of it in RE2 was fun, and always having that lingering dread hanging over you makes this one of the more unique experiences in the series. And the Clock Tower fakeout is one of the best standalone moments in the series, already playing on your expectations. It's just a pretty 'smart' game for how fast it was put together. Obligatory BARRY mention. As I've said before the Raccoon City umbrella (for lack of a better word) is my favorite setting in the series, and I think this does it a real justice. And a solid remake/reimagining, whatever you want to call it. It's taken all of the best "upgrades" the series evolved post-Raccoon City and slam-jammed them back into the Umbrella controlled city and... We Do It! It's incredibly fun to play, I'm still playing it in fact and it's so cool seeing everything from the RPD to the Nest all in glorious 2019 graphics. I won't harp on all the good here, it won GotY of course it's good! I'll just try to explain why it doesn't crack the top tier. With a remake, you get the chance to fix the flaws in the original. Some things, they nailed, like putting stairs into the main hall of the police station because what the fuck original RE2 no architect ever would have ONE EMERGENCY LADDER. They also expanded Marvin's role, made Kendo into a real character instead of a jumpscare, and turned Mr. X into a more terrifying version of his original self. That being said, they also didn't fix some things and actively made others worse. A/B scenario means nothing now besides a remix mode, and the recycling of bosses is a shame. The mostly A(Birkin) and B(Mr. X) was the best part of the original I think. Ada's character (cue running disappoint theme with her) is somehow worse (RE2 Ada is peak Ada imo), her not-death still doesn't get an explanation, there's no Death's Door to back it up at all, but I will say her FBI cover does make a little more sense. I think Irons got worse and Ben got shafted. I like the new discount regenerators, but with they wouldn't have been Plant 43s, but something new. Also one thing that really bothered me was taking away Sherry's moment in the true ending, how she was the only one that could fit into the control room, there was no reason to cut her part out. Also also Claire is super thirsty for the middle of a zombie apocalypse, which was weird. And the fact that there was no real crossover between the two playthroughs was a bit of a letdown. Really, most of the criticisms I have is in comparing it to the original. As a standalone, I think it is a great game worth many replays. As RE2Make though, I think it doesn't quite live up to the lofty standards the original set. And yes, I am THAT guy who plays with the '98 costumes and original OST. It's awesome. I'll hear no argument to the contrary. BARRY! For real this time! Rev2 to me improves on the formula of Rev1, which was a slow reintegration back to classic RE style with a modern RE shell. Claire probably has the best appearance-to-quality ratio for her games, and this is no exception. I also quite like the idea of seeing how growing up in the world of Biohazards affects people, and Moira is a great case subject on that (Sherry being another). And yes, seeing something decent come out of the 'Wesker Children' nonsense softens my view on it a bit. Really, this is the game that kept my hopes alive for the series in the dark ages and I think it's one of the better overall experiences in the series. Alex might be a bit of a discount Alexia, and we started our trend into spooky ghost stuff (the consciousness hopping) that carried on into 7, but otherwise it's a great addition to the lore. It expands on Uroboros, brings back series vets, expands BSAA/Terra-Save lore... It does everything right I think. Moreso than Rev1 I think it strives to be a mainline game, like CV before it. And honestly if you had slapped the 7 on this one I don't think anyone bats an eye. If Capcom is going to keep putting out sidegames in the series, this is how they should do it. Make them matter, use them to expand the world they've built, and make them mean something in the overall stake of the series. If we never hear about Natalia again, I'll actually be kind of bummed. Alex Wesker was even introduced in RE5, so using main games to propel side games is also the right way to get me invested. RE5, to me, is the peak of the "modern" RE trilogy and it isn't even close. There was more stake in the overall series with Wesker's involvement, the gameplay was tightened up from 4 without being excessive like 6. I don't knock the AI like most people since I've almost always played it co-op when I've played it seriously. And when I'm doing a series replay, I just put it on babyass baby mode and it's good to go. Learning the origins of the Progenitor virus was cool, as was the advancement of Las Plagas. Spencer went out like an afterthought, which was bad, and Jill didn't get one of the final rockets in on Wesker, which was real bad, but otherwise I'm alright with the plot. If the series had to move on from Wesker, the ridiculous volcano boulder punching finale was the way to do it. I don't personally think it was the way to go, especially after 4 set up so many things, but alas. I (with Dante) put literal hundreds of hours into this game from top to bottom, to the point where we even had inside jokes that I remember to this day (fucking Uroboros sprays, man). So yeah, underrated by people on the internet I'd say, but at the same time a deserving candidate for top-selling game in the series. RE5 also has by far the best B-Horror mook villain that Alfred and Salazaar wish they could be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9YkwQ74Ah0 One of the big things that pushes RE5 over the top for me though is the single best DLC in the series: Lost in Nightmares. Not only can you play it with fixed cameras (!), but it's otherwise a classic throwback Jill and Chris in a spooky mansion fighting Wesker romp that is amazing all over. Couple that with the fact that Dante and I waged a literal World War on those leaderboards for well over a month, and it's not an exaggeration to say that LiN is the single piece of RE media I've had the most fun with. Additionally, Resident Evil has a history of randomly having songs in them that clash incredibly with their horror theme. The most known probably being that rock anthem that drops in the true ending of RE2. I've yet to come across a co-op experience that I've enjoyed more. I've always been interested in the Revelations games, but bounced off of the 3DS one because I felt like I needed a second analog stick and that thumb stick thing just wasn't cutting it.
