Sometimes this is intentional, such as Sekiro or Titan Souls (main game mechanic) or situational like Binding of Isaac, or just hardline optimal strategy like Vanille's Death spell in FF13

Sometimes this is due to oversights in setting immunities like Vanish/Doom in FF6 or Deus Ex Human Revolutions penultimate boss (even though I consider this awesome)

And sometimes it's due to outright glitches, with sexy results, such as the penetrating b0re combo in Borderlands 2 or overflow kills in FF7

...

What is your favourite?

Fair enough, it's often an unpopular game mechanic

Personally I am all for it if it makes sense. The biggest case being assassin style characters. I am looking in to the board game Gloomhaven and I am really excited that one character that is a stealth class, has many attacks that straight up kills any enemy if a certain(semi common) thing is in effect.

I don't really use instant death strategies often but farming that one room in FFV with Level 5 Death was nice. Also, it feels great when Lethality procs in Fire Emblem games

Death Spell in BG2 is one of my favorites. It's AOE with no saving throw and no limit on the number of enemies affected. Only restriction is that it only affects level 8 enemies and lower, so enemies that it works on it will always work on.

Ah wait, for some reason I thought you were talking strictly about instant death for the player character.

Hmmm...I abused the hell out of Level 5 Death in FFV to get Twin Lances.

Whenever I think of instant death spells, I immediately think of the scene in the Dwarven Castle in FFIV when Golbez combines paralysis with his Shadow Dragon summon's Black Fang.

Selphie's The End is always a fun one just for the pure FU style of it, lol, though I'm not a fan of the game it's in.

I was playing Final Fantasy Legend II and I went up against a group of 8 Sorcerers, so I had my first character select the Rune Ax, which can reflect spells. The first Sorcerer tried to cast Stone, the spell got reflected back at him and since it's a spell that affects an entire group, it stoned all of them at once. The battle was over just like that and I laughed my ass off.
